Descendants of John McDiarmid of Killin Perthshire b. 1747

Many of the McDiarmids who came to Ontario, Canada from the Killin, Perthshire area, and are descended from one of the marriages of John McDiarmid b. 1747 Killin, Perthshire. He had 3 marriages and children from two of then emigrated to Canada. There is also an extensive descendancy of Finlay McDiarmid/Janet McDiarmid who settled first in the Stormont and Glengarry areas of Ontario around the year 1800. All of these McDiarmids were tenant farmers on the Breadalbane estate of the Campbells located on the north side of Loch Tay. Killin was at the southeast corner of the loch, and the Breadalbane castle at the northeast end. All the McDiarmids were inter-realted by kin or marriage, it seems.

I live in what was Osgoode Township/Carleton County, outside of the capital city of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. I can trace my McDiarmids to Weem and Kenmore in Killin Perthishire, but I do not know where to go next. I am actually looking up both the Campbells and McDiarmids, as they are almost one clan, marrying together for centuries. I have been able to get back to a Donald Archibald McDiarmid (no birth date) who married a Catherine McArthur (born about 1770). They had 4 children. John(b 1793), Anne(b 1795), Archibald(b 1843, d 1912) and James (b 1805). Archibald (1843-1912) married a Catherine McLellan and they had 8 children. One of those children John McLellan McDiarmid is my great great grandfather. Would you know the names of the wives of this John McDiarmid (b 1747)? Or would you know of someone who might have that information. I have gone back through all my Canadian relatives and I have found two separate McDiarmid families that seem to connect. The above mentioned Donald Archibald McDiarmid and a Duncan McDiarmid (b 1818) who married a Christine "Christie" Robertson (b 1814 in Scotland). They had 6 children, from 1841-1849. The locations for these people is not available. Perhaps John is the missing link to my search. Big dreams! Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Let me do some research on your message and I will get back to you, probably not for a couple of weeks, as I leave tomorrow for a 10 day vacation. What I can tell you is that I have none of the above McDiarmids in my family history. I checked the descendency of the Duncan McDiarmid family who settled the Glengarry-Stormont area near Kingston, ON in the early 1800's. None of the above names appear in this well documented genealogy. However, when I get the time, let me do some further research and get back to you. My ancestor, John McDiarmid, b. ca 1747 had 3 wives: 1) Jannet McDiarmid b. 1752 and died before his second marriage to 2) Catherine McNaughton in Feb 1795 at Killin, Perthshire, and 3) to Janet Clark in Nov 1806 at Kincardine-by-Doune, Perthshire. He had 5 sons with first wife: Hugh, Archibald, Finlay, Patrick, and John. I descend from Hugh. With second wife Catherine, he had sons Duncan (b. 1796) Alexander (b. 1801) and daughter Janet (b. 1798). He had a daughter, Mary, with third wife Janet. It seems that the key to your McDiarmids is Donald Archibald McDiarmid and Catherine McArthur. I will get back to you and see what I can find on them.
