________
Emma Membrey was the 5th of 12 children of William Stewart Membrey (1805-1887) & Elizabeth Alice Phelps (1806-1850). She married John Carroll (1824-1919) from County Donegal in Wellington 12 July 1851 and had at least 5 children in Wellington/Hutt districts

Emma drowned in Featherston 5 May 1861 at the age of 28
Wellington Independent, 14 May 1861
Coroner's Inquest - An inquest was held at Abbot's Featherston Hotel on Thursday last, before H. S. Wardell, Esq., acting Coroner and a respectable jury, on view of the body of Emma Carroll, wife of John Carroll, who came to her death under the following painful circumstances. From the evidence it appeared that the deceased, together with her husband and five children, were proceeding in Mr Lucena's car to Abbott's when, on crossing a stream, the water of which was unusually high in consequence of the heavy rains, the cart was turned on it side. The driver jumped into the stream/ The cart was covered over with a tarpaulin and Carroll managed to get out by cutting away the covering. The deceased handed four children to her husband, who conveyed them to the bank and on returning for the fifth time and whilst speaking to his wife, the cart completely turned over, confining the deceased and one child below it. Carroll succeeded in partially removing the tail board and by groping in the cart under the water, after removing some bundles and a quantity of straw, drew form under it, the eldest boy; but could not reach the deceased, who when afterwards found, was covered with the tarpaulin. After Carroll had given up all hopes of recovering deceased alive, Mr Lucena arrived, when some few minutes were spent in endeavouring to save the horse; the attempt, however, was unsuccessful. They then left for assistance and the body was recovered in about an hour afterwards, as above described. The jury returned a verdict of 'Accidental death by drowning.'
We would take this opportunity of impressing on the attention of persons residing in the County Districts, the importance of inquests being held in all cases arising from other than natural causes. The Coroner's Act provides that in cases where no Coroner is within 20 miles, any Justice of the Peace may act as Coroner. It is a duty we owe to society, to take proper steps for having enquiries in such cases properly made and to this end it is necessary that th bodies of deceased persons should be kept unburied until after the inquest is held.

Was John's brother Joseph Carroll, the father of Sir James Carroll ?

Have just stumbled upon this.....I am James Farmer Carrolls great grandson. Any questions about my family you would like to ask I'm happy to answer. Would also be great for me to learn more about the rest of the family!
