Looking for info on Hellyer family in New Zealand, specifically Alice and Muritai.
Alice is my grandmother on my mother's side, she married Arthur Stephen Ede, I am waiting for their marriage certificate to arrive. I know lots about my father's side of the family, Drummond, but little about Mum's. Supposedly Peter Ustinov is a relation through the Ede side, previously Edenstein. Anything will be helpful - this is all new to me.
Many thanks.
Regards
Jenny

Hello Fayne,
I have written a journal on your Hellyer so that any information can be added or amended as required the HELLYERs of Dunedin
Hoping you and others will send through info they have so I can add it to the journal and build a bigger picture going back as many generations as possible
This is what I have found as at 2 Feb 2011:
b]George Charles HELLYER (1861-1924)
- was born in Jersey and emigrated when he was about 13
- he married Mary Ann McDONALD (1861-1902) on 27 April 1893 in Andersons Bay Dunedin
- in 1924 they were living at 1 Queen's Drive, Dunedin
- Mary Ann died aged 41 and is buried in Block 10. Plot 12 at Andersons Bay Cemetery, Dunedin with husband George and son Sydney, also (her possible mother) Isabella McDonald (1841-1921)
the known children of George & Mary Hellyer were:
1894 - 1920 Ruby Isabella Hellyer
- married Charles Young ESPLIN (1893-1966) in 1913
- Ruby died aged 26
- Charles remarried in 1924 to Ruby Amelia COX (1901-1965)
1895 - 1958 Ronald McDonald Hellyer
- married Nellie Isabella FARQUHAR (1898-1934) in 1922
1898 - 1975 Muritai Flora Hellyer
- married Arthur James SPENCER (1895-1989) in 1923
1899 - 1990 Rachel Ogilvie Hellyer
- married Keith MENZIES (1902-1970) in 1925
1902 - 1927 Sydney George Hellyer
- Sydney was a railway Cleaner & lived at Waikari, Dunedin
- Sydney died aged 25
.. I believe George Charles & William Robert Hellyer were brothers
William Robert HELLYER (1866-1940)
- was born in the Channel Islands, emigrated when he was about 10
- he married Margaret Ellen GARRICK (1872-1957) on 18 October 1893 in Anderson Bay Dunedin
- William was a driver and was living at 10 Rugby St Dunedin in 1963. He died aged 63 and is buried with wife Margaret and daughter Christina
the known children of Robert & Margaret Hellye were:
1893 - 1975 Philip William Hellyer
- married Mabel Edith KING (1896-1969) in 1921
1895 - 1969 Alice Mary Hellyer
- married Arthur Stephen EDE (1885-1966) in 1910
- Arthur was the 3rd of 12 children of Edward EDE & Clara Elizabeth ALSOP who married in 1878 (I will write a journal about them soon)
- (Edward Ede was a son of Benjamn & Amy Ede)
- possible Arthur & Alice went farming in Ashburton
1896 - 1970 Joseph John Hellyer
- married Margaret Law GARDNER(1897-1965) in 1924
- both buried Dunedin
1897 - 1990 Christina Clements Hellyer
- married ? OSMAND
- Christina died at her home, 31 Cranston St, Dunedin, aged 92. Her ashes are buried Block 6. Plot 41 at Andersons Bay Cemetery with parents William & Margaret Hellyer
1900 - 1980 Douglas Hunter Hellyer
- married Emma Louisa Hawkes INGRAM (1902-1992) in 1924
- both buried Dunedin
That is wonderful. I received my grandparents, Alice Hellyer and Arthur Ede's marriage certificate today. They were married on 1 June 1910 in Oxford at the Registry office at the Railway Station.
Were William and George brothers? I am curious about Muritai and how she came by her name. My mother was named Betty Ngaroma and we've always wondered how that came about - my daughter Kirsty has Ngaroma as her second name as I think it is such a pretty name.
While searching for info on Grandad I came across this at the National Library: http://mp.natlib.govt.nz/detail/?id=75350&l=en
It is a cartoon/water colour of an Edge fainting and due to be married and it seems it can only be him or one other person. Rather interesting.
Regards Jenny
Hi Fayne,
Yes, William and George wre brothers
Read my journal the HELLYERs Channel Islands to Dunedin which can be added to or amended as we find more ...
Hi again Fayne,
The name Muritai means 'Sea Breeze' in maori, could be how she got her name
Muritai is also a suburb of Eastbourne, 12km south of Petone, Wellington, but this seems an unlikely source of her name
To show William and George Hellyer as brothers:
the 18 children of Philippe Samuel HELLYER
Let me know if you want any more information on the Edes or if you have some I could look at. I have lots of information going forward from this
