I have "put in" alternative spellings and reaped the benefits. After actually viewing census documents I can see how there could be errors and while I had the "correct" spelling, the federal government did not! I am back a generation on the Nolde side to when Conrad and Margaret, each single, immigrated. Next step: ships lists. With the Vanderhoof side, I am still searching, altho I have a maiden name for Hulda: Force, and I suspect she may have been from Livingston, NJ. Time will tell. The moral is to use alternative spellings in your searces and to get really creative. It just may pay off.
