looking for Eliza Phillips, nee Thomas of Stokes Croft area of Bristol. England.

Query by eileen1973

Eliza Thomas was born at Wotten under Edge, Gloucestershire, England in about 1836, she was the daughter of William and Hannah Thomas. She married Charles Phillips at Bristol in about 1863.They ran a Greengrocers shop in the Stokes Croft area of Bristol for quite a few years. I think they had 6 children, 4 boys and 2 girls. Eliza died in the 1890's. I think Charles lived into the early part of the 20th century.

Hello Eileen,

Very interesting - I've just moved to Bristol and have een looking into my family here. Charles Phillips was my great-great-Grandfather. I'm pretty sure he's the Charles Phillips who married Eliza. Assuming he was, one of their children, Herbert Thomas (b.~1881) of 14 Picton St, Montpelier, Bristol, married Evelyn May Stenner (b.~1884) of 32 York Road, Montpelier (and came from North Somerset) on 16th April 1906 at St. Andrew's Parish Church, Montpelier (demolished in 1969, now Montpelier Park). Herbert (or H. Phillips, at least) attended the Endowed School, Stoke's Croft which was destroyed by a bomb in 1940. Charles' occupation is listed as 'gentleman' on their marriage certificate. Herbert & Evelyn later moved to Roath in Cardiff and had five children including my Grandfather.

Let me know your email/address and once xmas is over I'll send you copies of some documents and a photo of Herbert and Evelyn if you like.

All the best, Jeff

Hi Jeff, thanks for your enquiry, yes it does sound as though it is the same family, the address 14 Picton Street has come up in my research, so hopefully we might be able to exchange some information, I would be interested to see the photo of Herbert and Evelyn. That's one thing I regret, I don't have any photos of past generations [pre mum and dad], my late brother David did send me an old 'studio' photo of our grandparents on their wedding day and Eliza would have been his aunt.
Anyway I'll look forward to hearing from you after Christmas when I hope, we can compare notes. so I wish you a very Happy Christmas.
