There doesn't seem to be anyone on the 1841 to 1881 census' for PORTSMOUTH by the name of Sly. Though there are lots for Portsea Island.
Do you have any more specific information?

Hi mowshowse. Yes, you are right re Portsea (Island). I am searching a family here. I do have much info on the Sly family, but would dearly love to have a photograph of my grandmother. I have never seen her. She is Ellen (Nellie) Mary Sly b. March 1877 daughter of Robert James Sly b. 12 April 1886. The oldest sibling to Ellen was Annie Charlotte Sly b. 5 March 1865. I was hoping, being the oldest, her descendants might have some photographs. Annie married Ernest Bush b. Dec 1865. They had 2 children, Ernest Bush b. 9 August 1890 and Annie Constance Bush b. March 1892. I have no further descendants for Ernest but for Annie Constance Bush, who married a male Brook-Wright, I have an Anne Brook-Wright and a Josephine Brook-Wright. Just wondering if there are records I could access that would give me any details on these 2 girls, and their descendants?
