'Sons of the Brave'
... Thomas Bidgood (1858-1925), born in Woolwich, Kent, the son of William John Bidgood, a master plumber, and his wife Jane, nee Williams. In his youth, Thomas Bidgood sang in the choir of St. John's Church. He studied the violin under the tutelage of Signor Erba at the London Academy of Music. As a boy, he attended concerts given by the band of the Royal Artillery, as a result of which he studied various wind instruments. He joined the band of the 9th Kent Artillery Volunteers in which he played the althorn and E flat bass. Later, he became bandmaster of the Beckton Band of the Gas, Light and Coke Company. (He was an employee of the Becton Gasworks.) Later still, he served as the bandmaster of several bands in the east of London

... In 1898 Thomas Bidgood composed the well-known march Sons of the Brave. This became hugely popular during the Boer War and its ready acceptance by the public and military alike established Bidgood as a popular composer of military music. Although other marches followed, including Knight Errant (1901); The Lads in Navy Blue, Merry Soldiers, and Silent Heroes (1909); The British Legion and A Call to Arms (1912); My Old Kentucky Home and On to Victory (1917) and Vimy Ridge (1921) to name a few, Bidgood?s compositions were not restricted to military marches. During his highly productive life he composed a wide range of compositions, including dances and orchestral works such as the intermezzo Honoraria and A Motor Ride

As part of a One-Name Study of BIDGOOD and variants I would be very interested in exchanging information for New Zealand and other locations.

At present I am reviewing the BEDGOODs associated with Waimnate, North Island, New Zealand, and their ancestry.

See B__GOOD Notes for more information:

I am the grreat grandson of Thomas Bidgood - composer of the march Sons of the Brave and other music. I am also the grandson of Albert Thomas Bidgood who emigrated to New Zealand around 1912 after the separation from his wife Catherine Louise. I have been carrying out research of the Thomas Bidgood family of which the following is a precis.

Thomas Bidgood lived a very ?colourful? life as he fathered five sons of which four were illegitimate. Thomas married Emily Moore until about 1901. He was living with a Rosetta Casselden from around 1911 as he had separated from Emily sometime between 1901 and 1911 (mentioned in his probate document ? he owed 6 years settlement money). Rosetta remained with Thomas up until his death in 1925. His death certificate stated that he died from gas poisoning while of unsound mind. He is buried in an unmarked grave in Tottenham Cemetery. He attended the London Academy of Music and composed at least 17 marches and a plethora of other music and arrangements.

All his sons were involved in the world of music. My grandfather Albert Thomas (mother Emily) played the piano and violin as well as helping Thomas with his bands. Albert separated from my grandmother in 1911 when my mother was three. He ended up living in New Zealand managing theatres and cinemas. Anthony Bernard (changed his name by deed poll in 1919) was an internationally recognized composer and conductor. He was organist at the Birmingham Oratory and the Jesuit Church in Mayfair. He founded the London Chamber Orchestra and became musical director of the Royal Shakespeare Company. He spent a lot of time recording classical music for the first time and also composed music for BBC3 radio in the 40s and 50s. Thomas Walter (the W.T. Bidgood in the 1911census) died in France in 1915 age 19. Henry James also known as ?Harry? ran a number of bands among which were ?Harry Bidgood and his Broadcasters? and ?Primo Scala and his accordion band?. He was musical director for a number of George Formby films as well as several recording labels and worked on music programmes with the BBC. Thomas? youngest son Warwick John Bidgood played the accordion in his brother?s band, and was also a composer and arranger. The mother of the latter four sons was Rosetta who was something of a ?chameleon? as she had a number of surnames, married a Butler then used Barnard and Bidgood (unmarried) then finally married a Beach in 1927.
