Mr HENRY HURNDELL
The death of Mr H. Hurndell, of Waikouaiti, removes a very old and well-known citizen of the district. Born in Ceddington, England in the year 1848, he left England in 1854 in the ship 'Subriner' for Australia, where he resided until 1861. In that year he came to New Zealand in a ship named the 'Seamen's Bride' arriving at Port Chalmers. He lived in Dunedin for seven years, being employed as a young lad in Johnstone's ironmongery store, on the site where McGavin's Brewery now stands. his parents at this time lived in tents, on the banks of the Leith where the Botanic Gardens are now situated. He then removed with his parents to Palmerston, where they started a brick kiln. As there was no demand for bricks at this time he left his father's employ in order to try his fortune on the Dunstan gold fields. In 1873 he married the daughter of George Goddard. From 1878 to 1880 he was employed on the formation of the railway from Dunedin to Palmerston and in the latter year was appointed to the permanent staff as a platelayer, from which position he retired on superannuation in September 1908. During the last 45 years the deceased was a member of the Methodist Church. He took a great interest in his garden, which is a landmark in beach street at the present time. The house on the property was in the early days known as Kilmarnach Store. He leaves a family of 10 - five boys and five girls - to mourn his loss.
They are buried Plot 24, Block F at St John's Anglican Cemetery

Many thanks ,Ngairedith for the info....There is a lot of information you have provided to add to my already lengthy list of facts. There is a summary of the Hurndell family History from 1825-1973 written by E.C.Mitchell,I have never been able to find a contact or connection with this person. Would really like to find the location of the Hurndell Brick and Pipe Works in Palmerston South, which Cornelius started;and with his eldest son John Henry Hurndell. Again, many thanks for all the extra details you have helped me with....Kind Regards, Chris Howes.

Cornelius Hunrdell was declared Bankrupt in August 1882. He was listed as a 'Labourer' of Palmerston, Otago

His debts were $80 (about $13,000 in 2011) and his assets were $6 (about $950 in 2011) - did he start the Brick Works AFTER this or prior ??

by ChristopherH on 2011-07-10 06:56:50

Yes,you always get in the newspapers if you 'mess up in life ..' nothing has changed. From my info. The Brick works was up and going from 1867..I have an early photograph I discovered at the Palmerston Waihemo Museum ...I located his 'unmarked grave' at the Palmerston Cemetery after lots of work...just next to the great Sir John Mckenzie's massive gravesite. I am planning to set up a HeadStone for him....Hope you can help with more info. Be great to have a photo of the family. Kind Regards, Chris Howes.
