WONGAN HILLS Cemetery, Western Australia
WONGAN HILLS is a town in the Shire of Wongan-Ballidu, in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, approx 182km north of Perth.
It is named for a nearby range of hills that are found to the north-west of the town, also named Wongan Hills, which was first recorded in 1836 by Surveyor General of Western Australia John Septimus Roe.
The area was settled by the 1900s and in 1911 the town was gazetted and named after the range. "Wongan" is derived from the Indigenous Australian name "wangan-katta", "wanka" and "woongan". "Katta" is known to mean "hill", but the meaning of "wongan" is uncertain. It may be related to "kwongan", an indigenous word for sandplain, or "whispering", in which case "wongan katta" would mean "whispering hills" (katta is a word for hill).
In 1925 an agricultural research station was established about 5 km north of the town which assisted in the diversification and improvements in farm practices through the state.
The area is a prosperous agricultural region with activities focused on sheep, grain and pig-farming

Mr John A. Dobson died at the age of 68 years at the Wongan Hills Hospital on November 20. He was a pioneer of the district, where he had been for 34 years. He spent his early life in mission work in East Africa and for a time was at the Forrest River mission in the State.
Calingiri Notes
We start our notes in rather a sad strain, as on Wednesday last
there was laid to rest Mr J. Dobson, one of the oldest settlers in the district. John, as he was known to all, was in his younger days interested in most of the activities of the district and even of late years he was to be seen at most sporting or social functions. He had been educated for the ministry and spent a number of years in missionary work in Africa and was a very interesting speaker on Africa of those days. He left a wife and family to mourn his loss and the sincere sympathy of the district goes out to them.
Death of J. A. Dobson 'A Stalwart Pioneer
The announcement of the sudden death in Wongan Hills Hospital of Mr J. A. Dobson, of Calingiri, on November 20, came as a great shock to his many friends. Born at Newcastle-on-Tyne on November 28th, 1883, he had a colorful and varied career. As a young man he was interested in Christian Missions and for some years worked with the Mission of the Holy Spirit in his home town. In 1910 he joined the Universities Mission to Central Africa and spent four hectic years in that country. On returning to Africa in 1914 suffering the effects of malaria fever, he was advised to come to Australia and he arrived at Fremantle with his wife on August 3rd, 1914. The Boys' Industrial School at Red Hill, and the Forrest River Mission successively claimed his missionary zeal in Western Australia, but indifferent health led him to adopt the open life of the land, so in 1916 he took up land in Calingiri, becoming one of the pioneer farmers of that district. He was a good churchman and well versed in its canonical laws. As a foundation member of the church at Calingiri he faithfully served during the pioneer stages and remained a staunch supporter to the end. As secretary for the Church Council, and delegate to the Anglican Synod, he became known in the city as well as among his country associates. A most versatile individual was John Dobson; a good sport, a keen politician, yet found time for his hobbies of collecting stamps and painting. He was also an excellent "after dinner" speaker. For years he has contributed to the paper under the norm-de plume of "The Baron," wielding the pen very effectively. At the time of his death he was writing his memoirs of mission work at Newcastle-on- Tyne, East Africa and the Forrest River Mission. The two former are complete (in manuscript) but the last is likely to remain in diary form. The completed manuscript is full of thrills, and contain impressive information in mission life, its trials and conquests. At a service held in the Church of St. John the Baptist at Calingiri on Sunday evening, tribute was paid to his memory - "a loyal gentleman and a stalwart pioneer." He leaves a widow, one daughter (Mrs Boss King) and three sons to mourn his loss and the sincere sympathy of the district goes out .to them. His passing is a sad loss to Calingiri and the esteem in which he was held was reflected in the very large attendance at the funeral.

West Australian, 14 Aug 1942 ROBINSON - At Konnongorring, on August 10, Duncan Ernest, beloved brother of S. Symons and F. Robinson (Belele), brother-in-law of W. G. Symons (Claremont), uncle of Hazel, Madge and Fred
.. Residents of Konnongorring were grieved to learn on Tuesday of the sudden death the previous night of Mr D. E. Robinson of Udenberry Hill. Deceased had been in normal health but suffered a sudden collapse and on being conveyed to the Wongan Hills hospital he passed away. Every sympathy is felt for the bereaved family, which only a few weeks ago suffered the loss of one of the sons, Pte. Howard Robinson, who was accidentally drowned while serving in the North-west with the A.M.F. The late Mr Robinson, who was sixty-six years of age, served in the 1914-18 war with the 10th Light Horse and it was while in France that he made the acquaintance of the lady who eventually became his wife. He had farmed in the Konnongorring district for a long period.

* ROGERS, Edward Joseph. 13 Dec 1922 aged 43
.. born Ireland, died Northam .. Fatality At Northam Mr E. J. Rogers, the pioneer store keeper of Wongan Hills, met with an untimely death on Wednesday evening by accidentally falling into the Avon River at Northam in the vicinity of Avon Street. At about 20 minutes past 9 cries were heard coming from the direction of the river and W. C. Greaves, employed at the Commercial Hotel, together with another man, rushed to the spot. Greaves discovered the body of a man about nine feet from the bank in four or five feet of water. He brought the body to the shore and by that time Dr Aberdeen and others had arrived. The unconscious man was identified as Mr Rogers. At the hospital efforts to resuscitate were carried on for about an hour and a quarter, when it was seen that there was no hope. An inquest was held this afternoon. Evidence was given by Dr Aberdeen to the effect that the deceased had come to his death through shock from the injury received in falling and from hear failure through accidentally falling into the river. He also found that the unfenced and insufficiently lighted condition of the river front abutting on Avon-street was contributory to the accident. He commended Greaves for his plucky action in going into the river in the dark. The body was taken to Wongan Hills for burial.

Like many of the Sadler boys, Charles was a quiet man but with a very strong character. He was a sincere, honest man and completely dependable and reliable in a time of emergency. He (and his brother Stan) and their families were strong and generous supporters of the Association and in 1990 were both made Life members. Like so many members of farming communities Charles was a keen sportsman and at various times participated in football, tennis, cricket, golf and bowls. He was a keen East Fremantle football supporter from way back. Charles married Mavis in 1946 and they were blessed with three children - Joan, Kay and Don. They were, and are, a very close family which will mourn his loss for a very long time. This is demonstrated by the following beautiful and loving memorial to her father which was written by his daughter Joan. The Voice of my Father sighs with the east wind that blows across Danubin Hill. As the sun rises, peach and yellow, the voice of my father calls with the magpies on the lawn, whispers through the waving wheat and stirs the treetops gently. The strength of my father lives in the rocks that tumble across Danubin Hill. In the blue arc of the sky the strength of my father curves clear and clean. It beats with the heat of a February day, and soaks the earth with a good winter rain. The love of my father soars with the eagle that nests behind Danubin Hill. When the sky is inky black in a summer storm the love of my father lingers with the smell of the rain. It glows with the white light of the full moon on the paddocks and settles with the blanket of night on the family and farm that are the love of my father.
This sense of loss is shared by every member of the Association who knew Charles and remember him as a firm and loyal soldier and friend. The Funeral and Thanksgiving Service for the life of Charles Sadler took place at Karrakatta on 12th September 1997 (service & cremation). Although it was a private funeral Mavis suggested that some of his old Unit might be sad at missing the opportunity to say goodbye. Accordingly, the following attended the ceremony: Ray Aitken, Tom Bateman, Tony Bowers, Jack and Oelys Carey, Jess Epps, Ralph Finkelstein, Tom and Mary Foster, Alby Friend, Reg Harrington, Laurie Harrington, Keith and Val Hayes, Bernie and Babs Langridge, Gerry Maley, Wilf and Lorraine Marsh, Jim McLaughlin, Ted Monk, Joe Poynton, Steve Rogers, Dusty Studdy, Don Turton, Roy Watson and Doc Wheatley. Apologies were tendered by John Burridge (overseas), Mark Jordan, Don Murray, Bob Smyth, Henry Sproxton and Clarrie Turner. Another good man is resting in peace. We will remember him - John Burridge.
