There is not enough information to be able to help you. Where was John born and do you know a date? The census records may show if Martha is married, but this does not prove who Johns father is. You may have to obtain Johns birth certificate to be sure.

John Christy Dowell was born May 18, 1872 in West Virginia and died Mar. 10, 1913 in Elden, Iowa when he was run over by a train at work. His mother was Martha Dowell, daughter of Jesse Dowell and Elizabeth Cooder Dowell. John's mother wasn't married until 1886 when she married Noah Guessford. Can not locate John's birth certificate.
