1875 - 1953 May Jenness
- On the 1 September 1902, women from several Dunedin Methodist churches and Port Chalmers Wesleyan Church met to form the Otago Women's Auxiliary of Methodist Foreign Missions ...from that link By December 1903 members had enough funds in hand to send a young woman to the Papuan Islands, and in 1904 Miss May Jenness of Lower Hutt was selected from several applicants. May received a rudimentary training from Sister Olive in Dunedin, and left New Zealand in 1905, sponsored by the Otago ladies but under the auspices of the Overseas Mission Board, Sydney. She was the first Methodist missionary sister to be sent from New Zealand.
- The following year May married an Australian missionary, the Reverend Andrew BALLANTYNE, at Ubuia. They had a mission station for a time at Bwaidoga, Mud Bay on Goodenough Island, off New Guinea
- a book, Language, mythology, and songs of Bwaidoga, Goodenough Island, S.E. Papua was written by Rev Andrew allantyne and his brother-in-law Diamond Jenness
- Andrew died of 'Blackwater Fever' in 1915 aged 39 on Goodenough Island. He and Diamond were in the midst of writing a monograph. 'The Northern D'Entrecasteaux'. Diamond completed it, acknowledging Andrew.
- May died aged 78 in Dunedin, 39 years after Andrew. She is buried Andersons Bay

- Diamond graduated from Victoria University College of New Zealand (B.A. 1907; M.A. 1908), and Balliol College, Oxford University (Diploma in Anthropology, 1910; B.A. 1911; M.A. 1916). From 1911 to 1912 he was Oxford Scholar in eastern Papua-New Guinea, studying a little-known group of aboriginal people. He then served as an ethnologist with the Canadian Arctic Expedition from 1913 to 1916 under the leadership of both Vilhjalmur Stefansson and Dr. Rudolph M. Anderson. His detailed studies of the Copper Inuit around Coronation Gulf, and of other Arctic native people, helped establish him. Although most of his time thereafter was devoted to Indian studies (and administrative duties), he soon identified two very important prehistoric Eskimo cultures: the Dorset in Canada (in 1925) and the Old Bering Sea culture in Alaska (in 1926), for which he later was named "Father of Eskimo Archaeology."

In 1926, Jenness succeeded Canada's first Chief Anthropologist, Dr. Edward Sapir, as Chief of Anthropology at the National Museum of Canada, a position he retained until his retirement in 1948. During the intervening years, although hampered by the Great Depression and World War II, he sought to expand the National Museum's exhibits, anthropological collections, and reputation, as well as to improve the recognition, understanding, and living conditions of Canada's native peoples. ...more at link

FIRE AT LOWER HUTT - The old homestead of the Jenness family on the Western Hutt Road, Lower Hutt, a sixteen-roomed, two-storeyed dwelling, occupied by Mrs M. Ballantyne, was damaged by fire yesterday. A detached washhouse, bach, and tool shed were destroyed and the walls of a one-storey portion of the main building badly damaged. The fire originated from a spark from a copper fire. The Lower Hutt Brigade rendered excellent service, reaching the building just in time to save the main portion, which is of wood and extremely inflammable. The house was recently sold by the Jenness Estate to Mr W. L. Jenness, who will shortly be occupying it
