I have never ever come across HOCKERY in Ireland. This could be a case of spelling it the way it sounds. 'augh' and 'ough' in Ireland sound like 'ock' as in McLaughlan. Maybe his name in Ireland was HAUGHEY or HAUGHERY.
But then, I think of Margaret HAUGHERY and she used to pronounce her name haw-a-ree. She was born Margaret GAFFNEY in Ireland and married a Charles HAUGHERY in the US and probably that's how he pronounced it, but in Ireland it would have been HOCKERY. In the Griffiths Land valuation records of Ireland I have come across HAUGHERY around Tyrone.
I think the spelling of names changed often depending on how they sounded to the one literate enough to write them down. I've seen the name Margaret written on a marriage certificate instead of Martha but everyone in the church except the absent minded priest was illiterate.

I agree, I have pursued that Haughery and I still didnt dig up anything. Its a real bummer when you come across the unknown and cant get past it. When Hugh came here from ireland prior to 1833 he must have changed the name, I just wish I knew for sure what the orgiginal was. Thank you very much for your input. I appreaciate it.

I was just thinking of all the possibilities. There's Haughrey too and then Hickery, Hickory, and Hackery (dickery dock) endless!
What about immigration records for Hugh? Or what about Henry's mother? I'd concentrate on her for now, forget about him for awhile. Were they married there or in Ireland. If she was Irish they were likely from the same county.

This is the Only Document I have ever found on Hugh Hockery.
Henry Hockery was my great grandfather, I followed him thru some census, I am trying to find my irish roots. Henry had a sister I found Her Name was Mary A. fox she was born 1818 Phily, died 1890 Phily I was trying to find a line to see if her maiden name was other than hockery again, a dead end. Any Help would be awsome.
