... A thrilling experience befel some Kimberley road settlers yesterday, in the Ohau river. It seemed at one time that loss of life would occur, but fortunately this was averted. A cart driven By Mr G. Zeinert was being driven across the Kimberley road ford, when the swirl of the flood waters got the vehicle into a precarious position. The brothers Horrobin, who were in the vicinity, promptly ruched to the rescue, but their cart and horse fared even worse than Mr Leinert's Horse, cart and rider were all carried down stream, the cart turning over and over in the rush of waters, while the horse was almost drowned, and the younger Horrobin was in similar perilous case. Eventually the harness was cut away and the horse released, but the cart was so badly damaged that another one had to be requisitioned to bring it into Levin for repairs. The need for a better ford in the vicinity of the accident is a very lively point with the Kimberley road settlers, who add that they would much prefer a bridge

NOTES
Manawatu Times, 15 December 1880
... We hear the Mr Herman Wollerman, with an enterprise which does him credit, has determined to open a Tea Gardens on his land facing the Fitzherbert Road, and close to the Manawatu River. There are twenty-five acres in the lot, and he intends to have the grounds nicely laid out with walks, shades, and summer houses, so that visitors can thoroughly enjoy themselves on Sunday or other evenings. The situation is perhaps one of the very best being close to the Manawaty Bridge, and with a good road to it. The idea is an excellent one, and we feel that in the hands of Mr Wollerman, it will be carried out in an effective manner. In Continental cities and in America, where the German element preponderates those tea gardens are an institution and a source of much recreation

Manawatu Standard, 6 March 1908
... The house occupied by William Hunwick, which was destroyed by fire yesterday, was the property of Mr Moritz Zeinert. The insurance was ?300 in the Commercial Union Office, for which Messrs Barraud and Abraham are the local agents, the same company having issued a policy for ?200 over the furniture.
Shortly after two o'clock the fire alarm rang out, a fire having been discovered at the residence of Mr W. Hunwick, a borough employee, situated on the corner of Clifton street and Cambridge Terrace. The fire had got a good hold before the brigade arrived owing to the house being exposed to a strong wind, and as in addition to this, the water supply was very defective, the building was completely burnt to the ground.
The first attachment of the hose from Ferguson street was practically useless, and it was not till the water was brought from Scandia street that there was any force worth mentioning and even then it was not up to the mark. It is believed the fire started in the dining room where the occupier's little boy had been playing shortly before the fire was discovered but as Mr Hunwick was away at his work, and Mrs Hunwick was in the wash house, the cause of the outbreak is not known

Hello Ngairedith,

Hugo and Annie Zeinert, actually had four children

Miriam married Maurice Joseph Begley, they didn't move to Nuhaka, infact Maurice was from Nuhaka prior to the war,

Maurice was in the Army and stationed at the Pahiatua interment camp , as camp electrician.
Miriam , Maurice and their 3 children moved from pahiatua to Napier in 1959 as they expanded there business to manufacture for westinghouse

Miriam didn't pass away at the rest home, she was moved to palmerston North hospital and later died there.

Hello Ngairiedith,
I am descended from Herman and Minna Wollerman (née Zeinert), sister of Moritz.
Moritz Zeinert (1850-1944) cabinetmaker from Guben. According to his wife Anna’s obituary in the “Manawatu Standard” 24 May 1934, pg 8:
They married in 1881 and In 1883 they travelled from Hamburg to London. They next embarked the steamer “Ruhapehu” at Plymouth bound for Auckland, NZ. They took a coastal vessel to Wellington and transferred to “Queen of the south seas” to Foxton

I realise your request for travel info was from years ago but in case you check back in, hope this is of interest.
