Joseph Vipon b. 1827 in Wales, came to Australia in 1860 with his wife Mary & their children aboard the ?Ramillies? - they are my 3rd great grand parents! I am descended through their son William whose daughter, Mary Jane Vipen (1878-1952) married my great maternal grandfather.

Joseph's father was William Vipond b.1807 in Wales, & joseph's brother was also a William b.1825 in Wales. In the 1851 census William b. 1825 is listed as William Vipan and he is a lodger. In about 1860, this William went to the USA, (as did their father William), and they settled in Pennsylvania. Joseph's & William's brother Thomas also when to USA and then on to Canada. A fourth brother, Richard VIPOND b. ?1838 in Wales, also went to the USA.

According to David Thomas' website at http://www.vieuxpont.co.uk/index.html,
William b. 1825 was married in Wales where his first wife died, he went to the USA with his daughter Maryann, and there he married Susan STITELER and they had at least one son named David Richard VIPOND who was the father of Johnathen Stiteler VIPOND (sorry I don't have DOBs etc).

In 1853, Thomas VIPOND married Jane JOSEPH in Wales, in 1871 they appear on the Canadian census (Nova Scotia) with their children, Mary, Sarah, William, Elizabeth, Thomas, Issac, Walter, Anne & ? Jane.

I'm now finding it difficult to move beyond Joseph's father William, so any assistance/advise would be gratefully received :)

What's in a name? Again from David Thomas' website at http://www.vieuxpont.co.uk/index.html he says:

'I believe that most with the Vipond name and its variants will be related. These are the spellings of the name I have found so far: Vieuxpont, Veteripont Vezpont, Veepon, Vexpont, Vipont, Vypont, Vispont, Vypunt, Vespont, Vipond, Vypond, Voypond, Veepond, Vippond, Vipon, Vipan, Vipen, If you consider that the Name originated in France on or about 1066 as Vieuxpont and that in the 1851 England & Wales census there are only about 279 Vipond?s and only about 67 of them head?s of households 1 Vipont Family and 30 Vipan's with 7 Heads of households, then I do not believe that too many adopted the surname. Yes I am aware that there are some in America, Australia, New Zealand and Canada and a few in other countries but that only represents about 100 families after 600 years!!!!'

So this gives you the spectrum of spellings for this surname.

I would love to hear from anyone researching this family, and would especially be interested in any information on William b.1807, I think he died in the US but have not been able to locate a death certificate.

thanks
Cheryl
