Hi Silver Vixen,
Yes, this is my husband's family. I think Reginald Anthony Owens may have became known as Reginald Anthony. He married Francis Lillian Griffiths in 1909 in Atcham, Shropshire. George Owens married a Martha Elizabeth Beyston abt 1895 in Forden, Montgomeryshire, Shropshire. Blanche Owens married a William Perks in 1906 in Hereford, Shropshire. They had 4 children May, Cyril, Francis and William. Joseph married an Annie Jones in 1914 in Owestry and they had a child Gwendolynne. James Owen is our branch of the family. I have found a possible immigration arrival in Queensland in 1911 which may be him. Alice Owens married a Thomas William Barlow in 1906 in Ludlow. This is what I have been able to find. If you can find more about the family that would be great.
Thanks for your help.

In the 1911 census James is living at 103 Bailey Street, Deri via Cardiff, Glamorganshire, Wales
James Owen, Boarder, Single, 23, 1888, Platelayer, born Elton, Herefordshire

For travel & immigration I have 2 but one is married with children so although not certain i think this is the most likely
Jas Owen, departure 8 August 1911, London to Rockhampton Australia, Single, Railwayworker. On the ship KAIKOURA
There are pages of men "Railwayworkers" I gave up at 1300, so I guess OZ was requesting them. Will start on the rest of the family next

Mary Ann Anthony
1851 census living at Cottage on Common, Great Kyre, Worcestershire
Samuel Anthony, Head, married, 34 (1817) Mason born Beltstone, Shropshire
Ann Anthony, Wife, 32 (1819) Tenbury, Worcs
Henry Anthony, son, 8 (1843) Tenbury
William Anthony, son, 3 (1848) Burford, Shropshire
Mary Ann Anthony 1 (1850) Tenbury

1861
Samuel & William both Stone Masons are visiting at The Knowle Cottage, The Green, Bedstone, Radnorshire
Ann is lodging at Gew Tree Cottage, The Green, Bedstone with twins James & Eliza 4 (1857) born Bedstone
Mary is at The Copp, The Green, Bedstone a servant, aged 11 (1850) Nurse
Cannot find Henry

1871 Living at Clunbury Village, Clunbury, Shropshire
Samuel, Head, 54 Mason
Ann Wife 52
William son 22, Mason
Samuel son 18 Mason Labourer
James son 14 Mason Labourer
Eliza daughter 14

I think Mary Ann may have married a William Simmons in Droitwich, Worcestershire in 1869 and in the 1871 census and they were living at Victoria Gardens, Kensington, London with their son William born 1871 in Middlesex(London). William died in 1872 at the age of 26 in Camberwell, London. Also a William Simmons aged 2 died in Kensington, London in 1872: this is speculation on my part but I could not find Mary Anthone born in Worcester in the 1871 census. I then looked at marriages and came up with Mary Ann Anthony who married William Simmons and in the 1871 census she is from Worcester even though she is living in London

Wow, thanks SilverVixen for all your info on Mary Ann Anthony and her family.

by wingersmum on 2012-04-30 10:33:19

SilverVixen,
My Mary Anne Anthony married Joseph Owens in Oct-Dec 1878 in Clun Montgomeryshire, Shropshire, England so the marriage to William Simmons is not her.

Hi SilverVixen,
I now have a copy of Joseph Owen's marriage to Mary Anne Anthony on 14 Nov 1878 at the parish church of Hopton Castle, Shropshire, his father is shown as John Jones, farmer. Joseph's surname is Owen on the marriage cert and he is shown as a widower.

Mary Anne's father is shown as Samuel Anthony, Mason which ties in perfectly with your info above on the Anthony family.

I cannot locate a birth, baptism or first marriage for Joseph under Owen or Owens. he may have married an Ann Poundley in Clun? about 1875 but I can't find this either.

I also have not found a census entry for joseph for 1851, 1861. I have found him on the 1871 Census as Joseph Owens.

A family member has an idea that Harriet Stokes may be Joseph's mother. I find the different surnames, Owen, Jones and Stokes confusing.

If you have the time, could you see if you can find Joseph Owen/Owens on the 1851 or 1861 Census. Also, if you could find a Baptism record. That might help to solve the mystery.

Thank you

I have found a marriage between Joseph Owens and Ann Poundley registered in the March 1875 quarter in the District of Clun (spans the counties of Montgomeryshire And Shropshire).

by ALV on 2012-07-09 05:05:03

Joseph and Ann's Registration was Clun Vol 6a p818

They were married a very short time as Ann's death was recorded in the June Quarter of 1875 in the district of Clun (vol 6a p424a) - Owens, Ann aged 37

Thank you ALV for finding the marriage details.

I think you are looking in the wrong place for Joseph born circa 1842. I believe looking at the censuses and details that he was born in the Clun registration district and probably in the village of Mainstone.

The problem with Joseph seems to be the possibility of other names other than Owen, Owens, Owenns at birth including his father's surname (Jones) and his mother's surname (Stokes possible).

I would try and obtain his Death Certificate and work from that information.:)

by wingersmum on 2012-07-09 21:38:30

As you said the different surnames on the censuses from 1871 for Joseph plus the possible birth surnames are confusing.

Joseph's birth registration and the censuses for 1851 and 1861 could be under any of the surnames mentioned. To try and find the death certificate seems the best possibility.

Thank you for all your help.

I did some thinking 'outside the square'. Joseph may have been born in Mainstone but did not necessarily have to been registered in the district he was born. He could have been registered in the Newtown or Montgomery Districts whose offices were just as close as Clun. I did find one for Joseph Owen in the June 1842 quarter in the Newtown district register- vol 27 p119.

Also I have been reading up about mandatory civil registration of births, marriages, and deaths in England and Wales. In the early years (from 1837) the onus lay on registrars to discover and record events. It is possible that he was not registered and if he was base born the chances were that he wasn't.

by wingersmum on 2012-07-11 02:17:28

Hi ALV,
Thank you for that. I agree with you that if he is base born then the possibility of his birth being registered is low.
