the Roman Catholic MOUNT STREET CEMETERY is a protected heritage site in Wellington, New Zealand (click link for more). It was the first cemetery in Wellington for Catholic burials and contains the graves of the first nuns and priests in Wellington. It remained open until 1891 although burials continued in existing family plots until 1954. The earliest surviving grave marker dates from 1851, and the latest from 1954. Although only around 200 headstones survive, it is estimated that there could have been as many as 1150 burials. Many of the early markers were simple wooden crosses, which have long since vanished

His son Thomas was my gg grandfather. He also had a son Michael who was the Station Master at Upper Hutt. I have a picture of his gravestone which states (hopefully correctly) that he died on Nov 30th 1859 aged 44 years, which is different from your list. The Meagher name was commonly spelt Maher even very early in church records in Tipperary. My great grandfather James spelt his name Maher as did his uncle Michael(Upper Hutt Station Master) but Thomas always spelt his name Meagher

12 Jan 1929 An old resident of Wellington passed away on Thursday - Mrs M. J. Moffatt, widow of the late Mr W. G. Moffatt. The late Mrs Moffatt was one of the early residents of Wadestown, and worked hard in pushing forward the interests of that suburb. She was one of those who were instrumental in getting the first school established there; at the time there were not enough children of school age, and some of her younger ones were sent to make up the required number. Later she served on the local School Committee. Mrs Moffatt made several visits to the United States to visit relatives, and on one of these visits lost her husband, who died in Brooklyn, New York. The late Mrs Moffatt had a family of eight children, of whom only two survive her, Mr R. Moffatt of Wellington and Mr T. S. Moffatt of Seattle, U.S.A.., who served throughout the war with the Canadian forces

2 May 1878 A fatal accident occurred this morning, on what is known as Oakes' contract at the Rimutaka tunnel, at which one man was killed and another severely injured. At daylight this morning several men went to work to remove the wooden scaffolding or "centering" placed underneath the roof of the tunnel, about four chains from the face at the Feathersotn side, while the concrete blocks with which it is lined are fixed in their proper places and cemented together. The lining of that portion of the tunnel from which the scaffolding was being removed had been finished about 14 hours, and the concrete blocks were supposed to have set firmly together. The unfortunate sequel, however, proved this not to be the case, for no sooner was the support of the scaffolding removed than the roof of the tunnel suddenly fell in burying the two unfortunate men under a mound of concrete blocks, earth, and stone. Their fellow-laborers promptly set to work to extricate them, which was a work of considerable difficulty and danger owing to the falling stones, and they had literally to be dug out. One of the buried men, Patrick Moriarty, on being got up, was found to be quite dead, having been killed on the spot, and completely crushed by the descending mass. The other, John Matheson, was found to be still living although badly injured and fearfully disfigured, having received the chief force of the blow on his face and neck. He was brought into town as speedily as possible by train, and taken to the Hospital, where his wounds were carefully dressed by Dr Johnston and Mr Monteith. His face is cut and lacerated in a most appalling manner, one fearful gash across his forehead having to be stitched up and he is severely bruised and crushed all over, but it is hoped that his injuries may not prove fatal. He was quite conscious at three o'clock this afternoon, and there are hopes of his recovery. Both Moriarty and Matheson are single men, and about 30 years of age. The unfortunate mishap occurred shortly after seven o'clock this morning
... Moriarty was about twenty-five years of age, single, and as far as is known had no relatives in the province. His body was removed to the nearest building to await an inquest, which will be held to-day. The accident is attributed to faulty construction of the framework

Mrs Murphy, who was 82 years of age, was the widow of the late Mr Daniel Murphy, of Sugarloaf Road, Brooklyn, for many years a member of the staff of the Wellington City Council. Born seven miles from Killarney in County Kerry, Ireland, Mrs Murphy came as a girl to New Zealand over sixty years ago in the sailing ship Ocean Mail and settled in Blenheim where she met and married Mr Murphy a few years later. Her outstanding personality and disposition made her the centre of a wide circle of friends both in Brooklyn, where she lived all her married life, and also at Taita where she resided with her daughter, for 17 years after the death of her husband. In addition to bringing up her own family of twelve children, she was well known for her kindly sympathy and ever-ready assistance to those around her. Up to the time of her illness, she took an active part and a keen interest in the work of women's organisations and her presence among them will be greatly missed. She is survived by a family of four daughters and two sons and several grand-children
