Looking for Thomas McLean born 1853 Glasgow Scotland, married Mary Brynn 1876 in New Zealand.

I have been unable to find any death records for my great, great grandfather Thomas McLean who was the first of our line to arrive in New Zealand. I don't have any information of his arrival, only his marriage to Mary Brynn in Thames, New Zealand in May 1876. Thomas was a mariner and the info I have is that he was "lost at sea", in 1877, the year after my great grandfather Thomas William was born (1876 - 1946), but I have been unable to find anything to support this. I'm a complete novice when it comes to genealogy and I'm not sure where to go next to find any more info. I would be very grateful for any help in pointing me in the right direction. Many thanks.

Buckle on 2012-09-17 03:55:21Thomas William McLean is also my great grandfather. I cannot find anymore than you about what happened to Thomas McLean, only that he was going for his masters' certificate when he was lost at sea.I don't know if he was lost outside NZ waters and therefore may not have a death certificate in this country. Mary Brynn married again to Thomas Ross in 1888. Mary is buried in Purewa Cemetery Auckland. I heard a rumour that Thomas William McLean went by the name of Thomas Brynn for a time. In the Thames Advertiser,(Papers Past) a Thomas Brynn is mentioned but I can find no death certificate for him, so this may be great grandfather Thomas William McLean.I think that there may have been a bit more to,"lost at sea", as I remember my father recounting stories told to him by his grandmother, Louisa,(nee Paul). Mary's parents were Margaret and Robert. They came from South Wales. Robert was a coalminer. Sorry I can't shed any light on the missing Thomas McLean.

Buckle on 2012-09-18 06:48:26Hi Wendy, My father was Kenneth Richard McLean, Selwyn's big brother. Joseph and Irene are buried in Waikumete Cemetery Auckland along with their baby daughter Jocelyn Bryndwr McLean. Would you know why Joe and Irene used the name Bryndwr? They had a race horse called Bryndwr as well, (Brinnie). The only connection I can think of is that the Addington Race Track is in the suburb of Bryndwr in Christchurch and Joe had considerable success training trotters, that raced there. It is great to contact one of my McLean cousins at last as I do not know any of them.
