PHILP. People often mis-spell the name. Wherly comes from North of the Tyne I believe. My Great grandparents, Wherly, had a jewellery and goldsmiths business

In the 1851 UK census There is a Sylvester Wherly born Germany in 1812 who was a watchmaker jeweller married to Sarah with 6 children. They were living in Newgate Street, Bishop Aukland, Durham. In the same census there is a Felix Wherly a clockmaker born Germany 1817 living in Tynemouth, Northumberland. There are a few other Wherly's living in Scotland, Devon, Somerset and Dorset.

/my father, John Arthur Philp, spoke of Sylvester Wherly, a cousin, an architect, who was asked to submit plans to rebuild San Francisco after the 1904 earthquake.

Assuming you live in the states the only American information I am looking for is Pawson Culley (1892), his wife Mary (1896) and their children Leonard (1919), Alan (1923) and William (1927). They went to America in 1923, Pawson is in the 1930 and 1940 New York census. His wife died in USA (when) he remarried but came back to UK (when) with son's Alan & Leonard who all died in UK. One of life's intrigues.

Just remembered another interesting fact! My father's younger brother, (probably half-brother) Allen George Philp. My grandfather, George Arthur Philp, committed bigamy when my father was 15 or 16 and I have been told my father ad to stand before York Assizes to swear tat he was a child of the marriage .
I came into a very small inheritance a few years ago. Fraser and Fraser probate research people tactfully gave me the impression that his side would not inherit but didn't explain why. His personality was quite different from my father's

Thank you. You have helped a lot, my grandfather, Samuel Watson Cowling, was a Chief Engineer and at one time served on the ship which broughtbErnest Shackleton's body back from South Georgia. He apparently fell overboard and died but my father believed that he committed suicide because of the terrible things he had witnessed during the first World War!

The name of one of Samuel Watson Cowling's ships was S.S. Glenmorvan, a whaler, I think.

Looking for more information on my grandfather, Samuel Watson Cowling, born June 1876 , Sunderland and his seafaring connections. He was a Chief Engineer and had some connection with the explorer, Ernest Shackleton, his ship apparently bringing back Shackleton's body from (or to?) South Georgia.

Any information re Samuel Watson Cowling, my grandfather, born June 1876 and died at sea the last information I have is that he was badly affected by what he saw in the Dardanelles in World War One and may have committed suicide!

My Dad was Watson Cowling. His Dad was a ships engineer and was lost at sea. I have a photograph of his Dad that has been made into a post card which gives the date of death as April and either1907 or 1927 (not possible to make out for sure). His brother John was known as Jack and lived in Canada (Vancouver).

As per previous Family Circle memo. My grandfather died at sea and his death would probably have been 1927 as he had children born as late as 1910/11 . Uncle Jack lived in Vancouver and had two children by his first wife, Isabel. Kenneth and Jacqueline. Jacqueline married George Winram and lived in Quesnel, British Columbia, Canada. Sadly, I have lost touch with Jackie. She would be about 81 now..
My mother's siblings were Jack, Bob, Watson, Gladys and Leslie who died a few years ago in Thorpe Bay, Essex.
