janilye on 2012-08-11 23:18:23The Burrell family,dates in a long clear line to Randulphus de Burrell, who in 1325, by his marriage with Sermonda, daughter of Sir Walter Woodland, became a landowner of some importance in Devon. His great-grandson. John Burrell, furnished a ship, forty archers, and twenty men-at-arms for the war in France in 1414. But the most note worthy member of the Burrell family was Peter Burrell, Surveyor-General of Crown Lands, who married the daughter of a merchant, Mr John Lewis, of Hackney, and of his six children Peter succeeded to the baronetcy of his great-uncle, Sir Merrick Burrell; Isabella married the first Earl of Beverley; Frances became Duchess of Northumberland; and Elisabeth married the eighth Duke of Hamilton; while his nephew became Baron Gwydyr (Peter Robert Burrell 1810-1909). Lord Gwydyr was the fourth Baron. In 1905 on the occasion of his 96th birthday he regailed the stories of how he was five years old when the battle of Waterloo was fought, and he had been present at four Coronations. On 19 July 1821 when he was ten he was taken in his grandfather's barge from Whitehall Stairs to the Speaker's Steps to see George the Fourth crowned.
