GRIFFITHS family of Wales and Liverpool

Journal by DNENNewton

Our names are Erica and David and we live in Wellington, New Zealand. David is researching his GRIFFITHS family who originated from Caernarvonshire, Wales and moved to Liverpool in the early 1850s. Morris (b c1829 Wales) and Catherine GRIFFITHS (nee HUGHES b 1833 Llanwnda Wales) married on 6 Oct 1853 at St Davids Church, Liverpool and had 6 children. 4 of these children died in Liverpool in infancy. One son, Richard (b 30 Oct 1856) appears in the 1871 UK Census. He went to sea and settled at Lyttelton, New Zealand in 1878. He married Mary Isabella THOMPSON in 1881, and they moved to Wellington about 1895.

Another son, David Lewis GRIFFITHS b 15 Nov 1858 is mentioned in the 1871 UK Census aged 13, a scholar, but there is no mention of him in the 1881 UK Census. In the 1891 UK Census, there is a David Louis GRIFFITHS b. c1859, Liverpool, occupation ship rigger, unmarried, boarding in Kirkdale, Liverpool. This may be Morris and Catherine?s son. We can find no further information about David in the 1901 or 1911 UK Censuses.

I can see David's birth and baptism (26th Dec. 1858) in St. Nicholas Parish in Liverpool.
1881 census : There is a David Griffiths, aged 23, born in Liverpool, lodging at 83 Waterloo St., Liverpool, occupation tailor.
1891 census : The same David, aged 32, born in Liverpool, married to Mary J. Griffiths, living in Crumpsall St. Thomas parish, Manchester, occ. tailor.
Could David have changed his job?

Thanks for your reply. We have already seen the entry in the 1881 and 1891 Censuses for David Griffiths occ. tailor. David Louis Griffiths (who we think might be a relation) was in the 1891 UK Census, occ. ship rigger. I should have added to our journal that both David's brother Richard, father Morris , and grandfather Morris were all seamen and the father was also a ship rigger. Morris Griffith's son, David was named David Lewis Griffiths after his maternal grandfather who was Lewis Hughes. Lewis Hughes and his wife Eleanor (nee Hughes)lived in Caernarvonshire.
