Looking for relatives of John Harwood who married Mary Ann Morley in 1883

Query by snooks68

I am doing my mother's family tree and discovered that the marriage was listed under the Harwood males. Does this mean that there were 20 male siblings and 11 females all in one family. My mother's grandmother was of aboriginal descent so tracing this is very important to her and her uncles who are still alive.

Welcome to FamilyTreeCircles snooks68.

The HARWOODs recorded in my marriage journal do not belong to the same family line.

The John HARWOOD and Mary Ann MORLEY married in 1883 only had eight children, all born in Ballarat, Victoria, and it appears John and Mary were also born in Ballarat.

Does this sound like your family?

John Harwood and Mary Ann Morley were married in Ballarat in 1883. My great grandmother was Mary Agnes Harwood born in Ballarat East in 1893 but all I know is that apparently she had 1 brother and 1 sister?? who were of aboriginal descent. Does any of this correspond with your family tree at all?

This family is not on my tree snooks68. I'm just trying to give you a helping hand put your family together.

John and Mary did have a daughter named Mary Agnes HARWOOD born in Ballarat in 1893 and expect this must be the correct family. I can also confirm Mary Agnes HARWOOD had three brothers and four sisters.

I will put a few details together for you during the day.

Just to confirm I have the correct Mary Agnes HARWOOD can you let me know her husband's name.

Mary Agnes Harwood's husband's name was Albert John Longley who was born apparently on the 1st of January 1868. They had eight children, 7 boys and 1 girl. My grandfather was the third son, Gordon Longley but his father's name did not appear on his birth certificate, because apparently aboriginal people were not allowed to be with white people so it wasnt listed. Albert left the family when my grandfather was 15 yrs of age, so the 3 eldest boys had to go to work, whilst the other boys were put into a boy's home and the baby girl was fostered out to a family. I mentioned it to my mum and she wasnt too sure how many brothers and sisters Mary Agnes had but thinks there were quite a few of them.

Thank you so much. Mary Agnes is now buried in a cemetary in New South Wales which I was given the name of by one of my great uncles who are still living. I might give them a call and see if I can get any further information from them as they are both old and some details they dont know.

Thank you so much Tonkin. I thought it was interesting that she remarried into the Miller family, as my auntie was married to a Miller too and there were about 9 children in that family, and her brother in law is my dad's best friend who still comes to visit from Kerang on a regular basis so it will be interesting to learn the name if you locate it.
