Journal by stanley69

Hi I am new to this site, I am married to a Rickard in cornwall and we have been trying to research the family tree, we know as far as my husbands Great Grandfather Nicholas Rickard and we know he married a Mary Tink we also know that Nicholas has 9 other siblings and it is these we are trying to research and to find out if they had families themselves, we understand some of them emigrated to Australia and Canada, we know that Nicholas's brother Richard married a lady called Gennetta Ellen Tink who was the sister of Mary but we have drawn a blank from then on, we know they were miners just need someone out there to help us piece together the other family members

Hello Stanley69,
I have some Rickards in my family tree. In particular Herbert Stanley James Rickard (1880 - 1942) Herbert was born in Moonta, South Australia and died in NZ. I have found two brothers, Cecil W.Rickard(NZ) and R.G Rickard(Sydney) and a sister - Mrs J. G. Phillips of Adelaide.
Herbert's father was J. Rickard. Herbert's connection to us is via his wife. They had no children. This info has come from Trove.
I guess if you can find out who J. Rickard is, it may connect to your family?
Hope this helps.
Regards. R.

Hi no I dont know im new at this so its taking some time to know where to start if you have any info that you think maybe of relevance to me it would be greatly appreciated

Hi there Stanley69,
I have done a bit more research and found that Herbert's parents are Joseph Rickard and Elizabeth Ann Eddy. Joseph and Elizabeth were married in 1869 in Daly, South Australia. I have found 10 children born to them in Sth Aus, however it looks like at least 5 of these children died in infancy.
Have a look at this site.
http://www.genealogysa.org.au/resources/online-databases.html
This is the Sth Aus. BDM searchable database.
cheers.

I cant believe that you have found all this information its fantastic, its taken me ages to get names are you able to find out which ones went to australia?

by Andrew37 on 2012-10-22 14:56:36

Hi. On the internet there is much material about Rickards, including a Richard Rickard born in Cornwall in 1818, who emigrated to Victoria, Australia in 1870 (mepnab.netau.net/r/rickard). This is from a Rickard/Morrish website. Hope it is of some interest to you. When I have failed to find something in other ways, eg Family Search, I always plough through internet sites. Hi its quite amazing what your turning up noggin im so appreciative of all this information, im sat here with family bible my husbands great grandfather was Nicholas son of Elijah I know he had several siblings which you have told me about can you find any information on Lucy I have her D.O.B AS FEB 6 1870

by stanley69 on 2012-10-24 16:18:16

hi Noggin, could you try find out for me who joseph rickard married he was nicholas brother im in contact with another lady and she seems to think it was someone called Jeane because your other info has been correct i was wondering if you could just do this for me thanx

by jkhansen on 2012-11-27 23:40:31

Hi Yvonne, its Julie here. I thought I might summarise, what i have found so far :

The siblings of Nicholas are as follows:

William - born 2nd Mar 1847. I just have his info from 1851 living in Bowdens Lane, Liskeard, Cornwall aged 4, and 1861 census aged 14 living in Pellamoors, St Cleer, Cornwall. Don't know what happenned to him after that.

Emma - born 19th Aug 1850. I have her info from 1851 and 1861 censuses (with same addresses as brother above) and 1871 census (working as a servant in Tavistock, Devon). She moved to Australia where she married in 1875. I haven't yet done more research on her.

Mary Jane - born Mar 1852. I have her info from 61 census aged 8 (same address as brother above) and 71 census (aged 18) when she was living with her family. She married John Clemo in 1875 in Cornwall. In 1890 they moved to the US(Michigan). They lived there for the rest of their lives. She died in 1905.

Nicholas - born 8 Jun 1855. I just have his info from 61 and 71 census (aged 6 and 16) when he was living with his family. He married Mary Jane Tink in 1877. I found Mary Jane living with Nicholas's younger sisters (Elizabeth,Lucy and Annie),a dn their daughter Mary E in the 81 census - but no Nicholas. I have not been able to find him in 81. He was mine captain of the South Pheonix Mine in in Cornwall. When the mine shut down, they moved to Michigan USA where Nicholas worked in a copper mine. He returned after contracting dust in the lungs SILICOSIS. He returned to Launceston Cornwall with his family and he then opened up a Barbers shop. He died at the age of 42. I found passenger records for the family arriving back in the UK in 1893.

Richard Taylor - born 8 Sep 1857. I have his info from the 61 and 71 census (aged 4 and 14) when he was living with his family. He married Gennetta Ellen Tink (Nicholas's wife's sister) in Oct 1884. I have confirmed that she was Mary Jane's sister. Genetta was living with her mum and stepdad in Linkinhorne and working in her step dads shop in 1881. (The girls dad died in 1870). Richard and Genetta left for Aus 1 month after they were married, and took Richards little sister Annie (who was 12 at the time) with them. They lived in Charters Towers in Queensland for awhile where Richard was a miner. They then moved to Brisbane, and Richard died in 1915. Genetta died in 1957 at age 95

Elijah - born 23 Oct 1859. I have his info from the 61 and 71 census (aged 2 and 12) when he was living with his family. Don't know what happenned to him after this.

Joseph - born 20th Apr 1862. This is my GGGfather. I have his birth certificate, and baptism record. I also have him in the 1871 census aged 9. I have a big blank area up until 1893 when he showed up in Australia, listed on the birth certificate of my Great Uncle Joseph, whose mother is Jeane Hamilton. Jeane was previously married and already had 1 living daugther at the time Joseph was born. I don't think Jeane and Joseph ever actually married. I know that Joseph, Jeane, and the 2 children then moved to South Africa where Joseph worked in the gold mines, and Jeane ran a boarding house. My grandmother said that they left Australia to run away from Jeane's past. Joseph contracted miners Phthisis. By 1900 they were back in England where they had 2 more children - Ellen and Elizabeth. AT this time they were running the White Hart Inn in St Agnes, Cornwall. In 1901, Jeane's daughter from her first marriage died, and in 1902 Joseph died. Jeane then packed up the 3 children and moved back to Australia.

Elizabeth Ann - born 27th Oct 1864. I just have her info from 71 and 81 census (aged 7 and 17). I think she moved to Australia, but I don't have any evidence of this at this stage.

Lucy - born 6 Feb 1870. I am currently researching her and have the following info. I just have her living with her family in the 71 census, and her sister and SIL in 81 census (aged 1 and 11). I believe she went to the US with her brother Nicholas and his family in the late 1880s. While in the US she met Charles Gribben. She had his child Minnie in 1890. (I still looking for a marriage record), though I have found Minnie's birth record. In 1893 she is back in the UK where she gives birth to a son, Herbert Charles Gribben. I don't know what happenned to her 'husband'. I can't find any death records for him yet. In 1898 she married John Jennings in Cornwall. John already had 4 children from previous marriage. They then had another 6 children together. They remained in the Kea area of Cornwall.

Annie - born 4 Mar 1872. I just have her info from 81 census living with her sister and SIL (aged 9). She then went to Australia with Richard and Genetta in 1884. But don't know what happenned to her after that.

The parents of the siblings were Elijah Rickard and Elizabeth Taylor (someone has provided some information in the previous posts, so I won't repeat here.)

And parents of Elijah are Edward Rickard (1786 - 1853) and Unity Bonney (1788 - ?).

Am still trying doing further research on Lucy.
Also keen to try and fill in some of the missing years for Joseph, but its been very difficult as there are so many J and Joseph Rickards travelling around the place, I cannot sure they are my Joseph.

Will keep you updated on what I find.

Julie

Hello my name is Ken Rickard and I was born (21Jan1959) and live in South Australia. My mother started researching family history and through birth and marriage certificates established that my great grand father Harry or Henry Rickard was born in Charters Towers in the mid to later 1800's. He became a miner. He made his way to Moonta, South Australia via Broken Hill and other mining towns. At some stage he married Mary Hannah Shiels (daughter of a priest). At Moonta they had a number of children including my Grandfather Henry Kenneth Rickard who was born on 22 January 1903. My Grandfather later married Gladys Cecilia Kilpatrick and they lived at Moonta - my grandfather was a miner. My father was the youngest of three children (two sisters)who were born at Moonta. He was born 15 April 1936 and the family immediately moved to live at Port Adelaide where they stayed. My grandparents have since passed away. The above information is the best I can provide.
Kind regards

Ken
