THOMAS BAWDEN BORN 1836 IN BREAGE

Query by cornishkid

I have a Thomas Bawden b1836 and bapt in Breage. His parents were John Bawden and Elizabeth Williams. He is living with his parents in the 1841 census at Perran Downs, Perranuthnoe. I cannot find him in the census past 1841. I think he may have died between those years but I'm having a problem finding a death for him. There are a few Thomas's in the census but I really don't think any of them are him.

I did find these census records but they are not the Thomas I'm looking for. In 1851 John Bawden would be 54 yrs old and Elizabeth would be 57 yrs old. I don't know about the marriage it's a record I can look into. Thank you for the info you sent.

The problem with the 1841 census is only states if a person is born in county or out. It is also known that ages could be rounded up or down.

How did you get back to Thomas Bawden 1836 ?

by cornishkid on 2012-11-08 15:32:54

Thomas is one of the children in that family but he is not my direct ancestor his brother William is my gggrandfather. It's just that I like to find out what happens to other members in the different families in my family line. The first 1841 census is the right one. Now in a family bible we do have a death written in there for a Thomas who died in 1860 at Liskeard, now we don't know if that is the Thomas it refers to or not. I have'nt found an 1860 death record yet. Also the bible has a death date of 1860 for a Betsy Bawden at Liskeard so that maybe his mother. I have found Thomas's bapt for 1836 in Freereg, also in the census William is actually 18 yrs old so I do know they round the ages down sometimes.

Thank you for that asheppard I will certainly check those records out.

by cornishkid on 2012-11-16 16:14:34

Asheppard, my cousin in Eng looked up those death records for us and they are not our relatives. It's a pain as there is those two deaths for 1860 which we have not found as yet so as these are not our direct ancestors we are going to leave them and try just going back on our line now for a while. I can only research on the computer because I live in Australia and out in the country I don't have easy access to records unless they are online.

Dear CornishKid,
I have been researching my family tree extensively with the help of a genealogist. Your Thomas and William are distant cousins to those in mine, but there is a much closer connection through a marriage.
Your relative Thomas along with his brother Edward were lodging with my ancestors sister in 1841 & 1851, Simon and Ann Wearn (Ann was a Bawden) The closest relationship is through their elder sister Elizabeth or Betsey who married a Samuel Hosking whose mother (Ann Bawden) was Anne Wearn's (Bawden) Aunt (confusing, but aunt and niece). The Wearns it seemed remained childless and also had Ann and my ancestor's (named William also) parents lodging with them aged 70 in the 1841 census. I am as close to certain as I can get with this. I knew there was a very close relationship between the families as Samuel Hosking and Elizabeth/Betsey (Bawden) son was known as my Williams son's cousin, and came to work for him in Australia (Grafton). He was in fact his first cousin once removed. Simon Wearne was close friends with my ancestor William as he was a witness to departure docs and his son Thomas (Australia) names his one of his children after him (Wearne as a middle name).
I think I have your relatives lineage back a very long way, I knew there was a direct connection between John's family and mine as the two families share all the same names. Perhaps we could share what we have and iron out any kinks with of us might have.

**I meant 'any kinks we might have'!!

by Bawden on 2012-12-11 21:24:42

Hi again, here are the details from the census data:
I should add that Samuel/Simon are the same person....confusing but enlightening. Also, remember that the elderly William and Ann Bawden mentioned are Ann Warne's parents(Warene/Wearn so many spellings...), so related to your Thomas and Edward via marriage, and a distant common origin 5 generations earlier

oh ps: dont mind the mention of Ludgvan. I think that it where the rest of the family were living by then, and Thomas at 14 might not have known any different when asked.
This family appears to have had their children in about 4 different towns along Mounts Bay. I assume we are talking about the same family here... from my end it all seems to match!

by cornishkid on 2012-12-14 22:26:32

Hi, I don't know that we have the same ancestors, I have a cousin in Eng who has been helping with our research.
In the 1841 census we have the family:
Perranuthnoe
John Bawden M 44 Tin miner Cornwall
Elizabeth " F 47 "
Jane " F 21 "
William " M 15 "
Honor " F 15 "
Thomas " M 5 "
There is also a daughter Elizabeth and a son Edward but they are not there in 1841.

Jane married John Scholar
William (my gggrandfather) married Mary Ann Bartlett
Honor married Samuel Williams
Elizabeth married Robert Dymond
Edward died in 1851 (not verified yet)
Then there is Thomas but we hav?n't found anything else about him but my cousin said the Ludgvan Thomas is not ours.

In Australia our family was around central New South Wales and Northern Queensland. The Bawdens in Grafton are not related to us as far as I know.
Check out my info and see what you think..
