George Bowie and Janet Harper early 1800s
George and Janet were born in Scotland and came to Australia in the late 1840s.
I am looking for whatever I can find on them and their progeny (of which I am one!)
Thanks

Ok solved one question, unfortunately it only give Janet, Father's name, James

If Goerge was born in the same area he was married this could be him:

This looks like George and Janet 1841 which means the Christening in the last post is not your George ie one was 1801 and the other 1813

Looks like everyone was born in Midlothian, Scotland
All I have on George is that he was born c.1810 in Little Fleetback Scotland
Death: 1856 Ulladulla NSW Australia
Father: Patrick Bowie
The chidren listed above are the same children I have listed.
George BOWIE, who died at Ulladulla on the 29 September 1856 was the youngest son of Patrick Bowie, Esq., M.D., H.E.I.C.S.,( Honourable East India Company Service) of Edinburgh, Scotland. .
These are the children of George BOWIE and Janet
George Bowie 1832 ? 1909
Katherine Bowie 1833 ? 1918
Louisa Bowie 1834 ? 1884
Mary Elizabeth Bowie 1835 ? 1920
Janet Bowie 1838 ? 1906
Elizabeth Bowie 1842 ? 1922
Alexander Patrick Bowie 1844 ? 1919
Robert Willaim Bowie 1847 ? 1930
Alice Anna Bowie 1851 ? 1900
The last three born in New South Wales.
There is another son but the birthdate gives, Catherine Bowie as the mother (No Father 1860. The death was registered as the son of George and Janet. His name was Alfred Robert Bowie he died at Summer Hill 0n 30 November 1935, age 74. He married Clara Emilie HALL on the 8 December 1888. The marriage notice describes him as the youngest son of the late George Bowie of Edinburgh. He died as the Rev. Alfred Robert Bowie and there is a photo of him in Trove.
Another couple of curious things is Patrick Bowie MD husband of B. Harper Bowie
Janet Bowie died as Janet Bowie Bowie and some birth registeration's of her children have her as Janet B. for instance;
The Sydney Morning Herald, Saturday 10 July 1920
BOWIE.?July 8 at Nona, Enfield Mary Elizabeth Bowie eldest daughter of the late George Bowie son of the late Patrick Bowie MD., A.E. I.C.S and B. Harper Bowie Little Keithock Edinburgh, Scotland
and
The Sydney Morning Herald, Tuesday 23 August 1887
BOWIE.-August 20, at her residence, 53, Forbes-street,
Newtown, Janet Bowie Bowie, aged 77 years.
Go into [url=http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/search?adv=y] Trove. Advanced Search add the years. All the Bowie's from this family had Notices.
I know I keep pushing Trove but I believe it is an excellent site especially when you have those 'brick walls'
Janet's birth name was Janet Bowie Harper which explains when she married she became Janet Bowie Bowie.
James HARPER b: 1784, Walston, Lanarkshire, Scotland and died 1866, lawnmarket, Edinburgh. On 27 April 1808 at Canongate, Midlothian, Scotland married Catherine Robertson b: 1784, Edinburgh, Scotland and died 1858, Edinburgh
These are their children:-
Janet Bowie Harper 1808 ? 1887 (Baptism 4 June 1808 I have a copy of Register)
Patric Bowie Harper 1813 ?
James Harper 1816 ?
Catherine Harper 1821 ? 1860
Josiah Henderson Harper 1828 ? 1888
I've gathered several documents today Private message me your email address and I will send them to you.
On Catherine Bowie's Baptism certificate dated 2nd. August 1838;
it says, George Bowie, Merchant residing in No. 3 West Preston St., and Janet Bowie Harper had a daughter born to them on the third day of June last.--Named Catherine Baptised by the Rev. Patrick Clason Minister of Buccleuch Church in this Parish.
Catherine Robertson 1784-1858 was the daughter of Marion BOWIE, who married Andrew Robertson. So that's how Janet became Bowie Bowie ;)
Noggin is right with the 1841 census (1841 census not reliable but most of the data here is correct) and the marriage is correct, but that birth of George is someone else.
Haven't found anything much on BOWIE. The records for the East India Company are held at the British Library (mostly paper) which is where you'll find Patrick Bowie he was assistant surgeon in Madras for awhile. He had 4 other children besides George; William, Alexander, Elizabeth and Louisa.
Here's what little I've found and must be cross-referenced;
Patrick George Bowie, Birth 22 August 1755 St Cuthberts, Edinburgh
Death 9 March 1809 Brechin, Angus, Scotland
Father: Edward Bowie (-1776)
Mother: Christian Jolly (-1802)
Spouse: Flora ? 1770-1800 married in India
Children Alexander (-)
William Dick b:1791, Ingaram, Krishna District, Madras Presidency, India. d: 28 August 1819 Edinburgh,
Elizabeth b: 1793, Edinburgh
Louisa b: ? India, died 1865 in Dundee, Scotland
George b: abt.1800 d: 1856 (unless you have proof he was born in Scotland it's possible he was born in Ingaram, India, although 1841 census says Scotland)
Spouse 2 : Margaret Raitt youngest Daughter of Thomas Raitt of ?
Married 3 March 1803 (this info was in the Edinburgh Weekly Journal dated 16 March 1803
difficult to read. Then I found the marriage register )
I just found the Will and personal inventory of Patrick Bowie Esq. I can't remember your email address so please contact me if you are interested.
