John's OBITUARY - It has been our painful duty of late to record the deaths of several old and well-known settlers, and it falls to us to add another familiar name to the list this morning. Mr John Morton, of Wallacetown, died at his residence late on Wednesday night. The deceased gentleman came to this colony some 23 years ago, under engagement with the New Zealand and Australian Land Company, and for many years managed their Seaward Downs estate. Subsequently he removed to the Oatlands estate, Wallacetown, the property of his brother, and a few years ago, on the estate being sold, he took up land of his own. Mr Morton was a thorough farmer, having been trained in one of the best farming districts of Scotland - Strathavon, and a better judge of stock or tillage could not be found in the district. His skill and enthusiasm have undoubtedly done a great deal towards placing agriculture in Southland in its present high position, and his valuable advice, always cheerfully given, will be missed by many less experienced farmers. The disease to which Mr Morton succumbed was, we believe, pneumonia, brought on by exposure to cold. Dr Hanan was called in when the illness assumed a serious aspect, but too late to cope with it, and gave buy slight hopes from the first. Mr Morton leaves a widow, and family by a second marriage, and several children by a first

This is great information and covers the two MORTON families who orginally settled in the region - one is linked to the NOBLE family, and the other to the MORTON family who arrived from East Kilbride in Scotland. I am still looking for THOMAS MORTON who arrived in 1859 on the Cheviot into Port Chalmers, brother of John Morton, who disappeared after the initial arrival was recorded.

Great Information!

I am looking for Clement Dickson and Elizabeth Morton who came to Invercargill c1863. They had 12 children born there. By 1883 Clem and Elizabeth had moved to Dunedin and by 1901 they were in Melbourne Australia.
They had tree sons who carried on the family name, Alfred Clement, William George and Sidney Augustus. Both parents died in Australia.
If anyone has any information on this lost family please contact Lee Whitmore.
