Can you give approx birth date ? do you know his parents names, spouse or children, siblings?
G'day noggin (love the name) My problem is I have a few of them but in my excitement to get them on my tree, I didn't check siblings properly and I think I've added people who either don't belong or aren't where they should be. Anyway, if you can be of any help I'd be absolutely dellighted.
4.4.1820 Felstead, Essex, died 16.4.1890 Tottenham, London. I have his parents as Thomas and Elizabeth,
25.9.1843 Felsted, Essex, parents Joseph and Mary Anne.
1785 Finchingfield, Essex, parents John and Amy.
1717 Finchingfield, Essex 28.2.1798 Finchingfield, Essex. Parents Joseph and Mary.
1686 Finchingfield, Essex, 9.2.1741, parents Joseph and Mary but different siblings to the one above.
1661 Finchingfield, Essex, no death date. Parents Joseph and Sarah
Thank you so much for replying - I really didn't expect it to happen
OK I could not find Joseph and Mary Ann Salmon in the 1851 census. In 1861 they were living in Beacontree Road, Felsted. Mary Ann was born in Rayne, Essex and Joseph was born in Felsted, Essex. Their eldest child Joseph was born in 1844 in Felsted, Essex.
I would have expected to find a marriage for Joseph and Mary Ann registered in either Braintree or Dunmow in or around 1840-44.
I found two:
England & Wales, FreeBMD Marriage Index, 1837-1915
Name: Joseph Salmon
Date of Registration: Oct-Nov-Dec 1837
Registration district: Dunmow
Inferred County: Essex
Volume Number: 12
Page Number: 144A
Spouse: Mary Chiles
England & Wales, FreeBMD Marriage Index, 1837-1915
Name: Joseph Salmon
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1841
Registration district: Braintree
Inferred County: Essex
Volume Number: 12
Page Number: 31
Spouse: Marian Holly
The only other one I could find was;
England & Wales, FreeBMD Marriage Index, 1837-1915
Name: Joseph Salmon
Date of Registration: Jul-Aug-Sep 1842
Registration district: Ongar
Inferred County: Essex
Volume Number: 12
Page Number: 259
Spouse: Mary Ann Bird
Ongar, Essex is about 20+miles from Felsted or Rayne.
The only way to be certain of at least his fathers name is to get the marriage cert,
At this point I do not know which on is correct. Or you get one of their chilred birth registrations to find Mary Ann's surname.
I also tried looking on FamilySearch for parish records with no success.
How do u DO that? Thank you so much for looking. I can start using what you've found and see if I can go further with it. Can I ask you a question though. I've built my tree through my heritage but I can't find information as you just did. I'm thinking of changing to ancestry. Do you have any experience with them?
G'day Lynzzss. My family has a copy of the birth certificate of William Salmon born 1866 (my ggrandfather) and the details of the parents are Joseph Salmon and Mary Ann Salmon nee Olley. I think the key to the puzzle is the fact that Mary Ann was illiterate. She signed the document with a X. Therefore could it be that Marian Holly is actually Mary Ann Olley? The birth occurred in Felsted, in the registrar district of Dunmore, sub district Stebbing, Essex. I have a digital photo of the certificate but need to get the original scanned. I am very keen to find and confirm Joseph's father. From other sources it is suggested that Joseph's father is Thomas Salmon born 1777. Have you any further information on this? Best regards, David Salmon.
G'day David. Unfortunately I don't but haven't been doing anything on my tree much this year - looking after my mum who has unfortunately gone a few months now. I don't have the heart for it at the moment but definitely will get back to it. I'm not at all sure I have my tree correct as far as they're concerned but you're more than welcome to get on it through my heritage. Your theory sounds good to me regarding Mary Ann though. Thinking about changing over to ancestry - people seem to get more information from there but the idea of transferring 800 odd people is a bit daunting at the moment also. Love to keep in touch and I'll pass this on to cousins as well - see if they have anything. Where are you in the world?
By the G'day I take it you are based in Australia.
http://www.freebmd.org.uk/ I believe this is free but might not have all entries.
this is also free: https://familysearch.org/
And this: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/index.htm
the above allows you to search by county and parish
There are two sites available in the UK:
www.findmypast.co.uk and www.findmypast.co.uk
Not alot to pick between them but ancestry as be going longer
You should be able to download a gedcom file from 'my heritage' and upload the file to start a new tree where ever you decide to subcribe too.
In Melbourne - world's most liveable city!!!! Clearly you know a lot about research - thank you for your suggestions - I'll definitely check them out. Thanks too for the suggestion about the gedcom - that's my idea of transferring data - minutes rather than weeks of work. Thank you very much. If it's still day wherever you are then have a great one. Regards,Lyn
G'day Lynzzs. Just to let you know that I have a copy of the marriage of Joseph Salmon and Mary Ann Holly (really supposed to be Olley). It gives his father's name as Thomas Salmon, a labourer. It also states that Joseph residing in Felsted at the time of the marriage
That is absolutely fantastic - congratulations. How do u feel when u find something like that? It must be like finding gold. Wouldn't u love to have access to him for just one hour so u could ask all the questions still running around in your head? Thanks for helping with my family - I really appreciate it. Happy Xmas whatever you're doing and wherever you are. Regards. Lyn
