Scottish Genealogists at WDYTYA Live

Article by wheechmcgee

The Association of Scottish Genealogists (ASGRA) had a very successful 3 days at the Who Do You Think You Are Live exhibition at London Kensington Olympia and I was in attendance on Friday and Saturday. I dealt with an extremely varied array of questions from a lady who may be descended from a Norman Knight of 1066 called de Somerville who had extensive estates in Scotland. Then there was a gentleman descended from African slaves taken to Jamaica positive that he had Scottish slave-owner blood in his veins and desperate to prove it. The most curious one was from a Dutch archivist researching her own family tree and with the likelihood of being descended from a Scottish mercenary soldier who married in Edinburgh in 1598 and went to Holland in 1606 to fight in the Dutch War of Independence and never came back. The name was Turnbull, which became Trumbull then Trommel (Dutch for drum). So you never know where your Scottish ancestry is going to take you!! Find out more at http://www.asgra.co.uk - see you there.
