JOSEPH ALFRED ABBOTT: New Bedford, Massachusetts and New Zealand.

Journal by Lesley12

JOSEPH ALFRED ABBOTT was my Greatgreat grandfather. He married MARY ANN HUTT, my Great great grandmother in 1873 in Cust, Canterbury, New Zealand. His death certificate states that he was born in the United States of America. His daughters (my Greatgrandmother) birth certificate states that he came from New Bedford in North America.
JOSEPH had been married previously in 1863 to MARY ANN COSGRAVES who died in 1867. On this marrige certificate his occupation is "Steward".
I have found him on several ships within NZ/Australian waters, as a cook/steward in the early 1860s, all records give his origin as 'New Bedford'.
The Latter Day Saints, Family Search website states the following: JOSEPH ALFRED ABBOTT, born about 1846 to JOSEPH and CAROLINA A ABBOTT nee FOSTER, of Andover, Massachusetts, married in NZ in 1873 to MARY ANNE HUTT at Cust in Canterbury NZ.
On perusing a book about the history of the Andover Abbotts written by Lemuel Abijah Abbott and printed in 1909, I find that Lemuel has JOSEPH ALFREDS death in Wisconsin in the 1870s. He was married to Selona...
I have seen him referred to as JOSEPH ALBERT rather than JOSEPH ALFRED...........Are there two people or has the name been transcribed incorrectly?
Is there someone in MASSACHUSETTS, WISCONSIN or NEW ZEALAND who can help me solve the mystery of the origin of JOSEPH ALFRED ABBOTT who died in NZ in 1888 and is buried in Bolton Memorial Park in Wellington, NZ.

Hi Lesley, have you had any luck with tracking down these New Bedford Abbotts? I'm also tracing that connection from here in New Zealand. Hoping to find out more about the family that remained in the US, whether Joseph Alfred had other siblings or cousins that were also in Massachusetts? Thanks, Sofia

Hi Lesley,
I must be a distant rellie of yours as Joseph Abbott is my Great Great Great Grandfather. I have just today decided to take up geneology, starting with this chap as other family members have hit a dead end. I am the great grand daughter of Gladys Eileen Hill (nee Abbott) of the West Coast, South Island. Her Father was the eldest son of Joseph Alfred Abbott. How do you fit in to all this and how are we related? Have you had any more luck with this since you last posted? Our family rumours have it that there must be either an American Indian or African American link judging by some of the pictures of his decendants but that may just be a romantic notion?
Look forward to hearing from you soon.
Nikki

These marriages suggest that your Joseph did not marry a Saloma J Shattuck.

New Zealand, Marriage Index, 1840-1934
Name: Joseph Abbott
Marriage Year: 1863
Spouse: Mary Ann Cosgraves
Folio Number: 667

New Zealand, Marriage Index, 1840-1934
Name: Joseph Alfred Abbott
Marriage Year: 1873
Spouse: Mary Ann Hutt
Folio Number: 2270

All the above suggest that this Joseph was born in Andover MA which is about 81 miles north of New Bedford.

New Bedford in North America is in the county of Bristol Massachusetts. It might be worth looking for births in that county.

According to the death reg Joseph Abbott a labourer died on the 12 August 1888 age 44. His father was James Abbott a sugar planter. Born in the USA he had lived for 26 yrs in NZ. He was 28 yrs when he married Mary Ann Hutt and they had 8 children.

Does this help ??

I do not know how to attach the death cert/reg here but if you send me your email addy via private message I will mail it to you.

Hi Wizard28,

I am very pleased to hear from you, and yes, it is a great help, as you have confirmed all the information that I have.
I will take your advice and see what I can find in the records for 'Bristol'.
Joseph Alfred Abbott and MaryAnn Hutt are my Great Great Grandparents. Many thanks for taking the time to do this research, as you can see, some of it is a bit of a mystery.... Josephs father 'James, a sugar planter' and a 2nd Joseph A Abbott born to the same parents and living and dying in Wisconsin, USA.
Joseph and Caroline Abigail also had a daughter, Caroline, born 2 years after our Joseph Alfred Abbott. Her death and the early death of her only child, a son, is the end of that family line.
To date, I haven't been able to find a death or a burial for the Joseph Alfred Abbott who lived in Wisconsin. I don't suppose you would have come across that ?
If you would like to contact me my email is lesleylowe12@gmail.com.
Thanks again,
Lesley.

I am interested in those records nasche. I am a great great granddaughter of Joseph and am having the same problems with nailing down his birth in New Bedford. I have plenty of information about him once he marries in NZ but would love to know his ancestry. If you are willing to send it to my email address I would be very grateful. I am a cousin of Lesley above and my email address is youngjenny22@gmail.com

Hi all, I am the Great Great Great Grand-daughter of Joseph Alfred Abbott and his second wife Mary Ann Hutt (via their daughter Lena Abbott).
I would be interested also in sharing and receiving any information people may have on the Abbotts and Hutts (although this thread indicates you may all have more than me).
Very interested in connecting - my email is corlett.riley@gmail.com
