On this roll he lists himself as a clerk at the Paper Mills in Fyansford. Other CLARKEs living at the town of Fyansford were- Adeline Amelia CLARKE (HD), Effie Emily CLARKE(HD), Ivy Beatrice CLARKE (HD), John Thomas CLARKE (Farmer), William Percy CLARKE (farmer), Possibly the one family but not necessarily related to Charles Edward.
Then in 1931 I don't find him at Geelong and there are 5 Charles Edward CLARKEs on the roll but this one below is the only one living alone with the occupation of clerk.

After that it all gets a bit sticky Charles Edward CLARKE's all over the place and no clerks' so I think he must have retired and find one living in Kooyong but not alone with a Charlotte Louise.

I think I crossed a line somewhere between 1924 and 1936 and picked up another Charles Edward after 1924.

Janilye - Thank you again for all the information you have gathered for me, but I believe that Charles Edward Clarke must have left Australia when he was about 19 or 20 which would have been about 1877 or 1878. The other Charles Edward Clarke that was born in Ballarat to George Helps Clarke and Ann Jane Pemberton stayed in Australia and died there.
I am trying to find out where Charles Edward Clarke lived as a child/teenager between 1860 and 1877
His brother James Peter Clarke born 1851 was in Sydney between 1879 and 1886 and then he returned to England but there is no sign of his mother Charlotte Clarke returning to England so I presume Samuel James Clarke & Charlotte Clarke either divorced or Charlotte died? There is a death in Sydney of a Charlotte Clarke in 1861 but that would mean the children were on their own (James 10 years & Charles Edward 4 years). Does anybody know what would happen to children if they didn't have their parents with them? I find it strange that Samuel James Clarke returned to England without his children if his wife was dead!
The other thing is I can't purchase a birth certificate from the Australian BMD because they say they can't find Charles Edward Clarke and yet I was told years ago there he was registered 1858 in New Town Geelong Victoria Australia! I managed to buy an image of Margaret Jane Clarkes birth details, that is how I found out about Samuel John Clarke
