Looking for White of New York

Query by lilviking

Joseph White married Jannetje Van Houten in Brooklyn,N.Y. around 1785 and alledgedly came from France. I question this because I find no shipslist for a Joseph White from France within a 20 year window of the year stated (1783) I believe he may have actually come from Quebec or Massachucettes and may have spoke French as well as English. They had a son Joseph in 1792 who married Annie who was born 1794 in Queens, N.Y. Then Joseph jr. had a son John White in 1819 and married Eliza Ellen Stillwell who was born 1820 in Suffolk, N.Y. I would like to find any info on this Joseph White. I believe the family goes back to Ireland and Wales. I was told by my father that Joseph White was the holder of some very valuable paperwork that entitled him to a large portion of the U.S. I have found nothing confirming this but have come across another Joseph White who ran a print shop in England at this same time who recieved some very important scientific paperwork from the scientific acadamy of France to be published but seemed to have misplaced the paperwork. This paperwork was the latest scientific discoveries and probably valueable. Perhaps coincedence but I cannot find any info on my ancestor.

Hello!
I also descend from Joseph White & Jannetje Van Houten (through their daughter, Sarah). I don't have a ton of information on them. It is especially hard to find information on Joseph. I would be willing to share what I have - it would be nice to share information!
I hope to hear back from you.

Dear springs, I have learned a new clue for Joseph White...Since the family claim decendency from the Mayflower's William White I hadn't realized that in the early 1700's a major part of eastern America was called New France! So it is most likey I believe that Joseph White traveled from Massachusetts to New York. It is also very likely that the word "New" in New France was most likely omitted on the census which was very common during that time when it would have been understood the same as being born "upstate" when being a new resident in Brooklyn, or then Flatlands, new Amsterdam.

I have also submitted my DNA to the National Geographic Helix DNA project and will transfer the results to the White's family DNA project at Family Tree .com as soon as results are available.
