Looking for information about the Crowe family from Gobarralong, NSW

Query by Phil_Drew

My wife is a descendant of James Crowe of Gobarralong, a family whose history is related by Angela Young in Ripe for harvest, self-published in 1980. I am interested in whether any further information has been developed since then by family members. The first Crowe's arrived in NSW as free settlers in 1813.

I was particularly interested in the claim that James Crowe's father, Michael, left the family to return to England and became the Master of the Brazil Packet a 173 ton brig mainly sailing between Hobart/Launceston and Hokianga Harbour in New Zealand in the 1840s. I have sufficient evidence to show that Capt. William Crow of the Brazil Packet was not William Crowe, the father of James.

I am also curious about some of the claims in Ripe for harvest that Michael was a member of the 73rd Regiment of Foot. At some points it is suggested that Michael arrived (with two brothers) as part of the replacement for the NSW Corps. At some points the arrival is cited as 1810, that is with the original contingent, and at others as part of the additional reinforcements in 1813 just prior to the Regiment being rotated to India.

I am also interested in the family of William Crowe and Eleanor Hayes. They were the parents of your James Crowe of Gobarralong, and they also had a pretty large family. I am descended from one of their other children. I have been trying to find out more about William Crowe. Michael G Crowe was his brother and there was also an Edward Crowe who was a brother of William and Michael. I have evidence for this. I would particularly like to know about the connection or not with William Crowe Master of the Brazil Packet.

Hi Anthea,
Thanks for the message. I have several documents that you may find useful. These are: an annotated transcript of Angela Young's Ripe for harvest. In it I draw attention to inconsistencies and issues to be checked. I have also just done a piece on what we really know about William Crowe, about the voyages of the Brazil packet that demonstrates Capt. Crow was not William Crowe, about the supposed arrival of Eleanor Crowe in Sydney with Captain Dickens and wife in 1809!! and I am working on what we know about James of Gobarralong.

These documents are too big to email but I can lodge them on Dropbox and invite you to access them. If you send me your email address I will invite you to join and you can access the articles in PDF and make of them what you will.

Regards,
Phil Drew

Hi There, I am also interested in the same Crowe family. My maternal grandmother was a Crowe. Her father was Henry George, Son of Michael who in turn was a Son of James.

Hi

I am doing an archival description assignment on the Byrne and Crowe family papers (i am a descendant of Mary Theresa Byrne). I need some biographic details on Angela Young. She wrote Ripe for Harvest on the Byrne and Crowe families. Any idea who her parents were, or how she fits in?

Hi, I am James Crowe great great granddaughter. James' father was William not Michael. I have The book Ripe and have met Angela. She is one of James' daughters grandchild. I have lots of information and photos of James. If you good James Crowe Gobarralong this tells you James' obituary on 16 Feb 1889. Good luck
