Thanks, but Murdo was born in Scotland in 1870 and had been in Australia for at least 12 years by 1911.

Murdo lived in Sandy Bay, Tasmania, died in Sydney in 1946.

Thanks Chazza. How do you know where to look. I feel one problem with records in Australia is what records existed and with whom before and after Federation of the Australian states.

Research is never ending, so much more is being added to the WWW and search engines like Google are constantly able to find more and more as indexes etc are added. I always use Google to search, trying different combinations of Surname, christian names. If you live in Tasmania a trip to the archives might reveal a lot more. Or if you don't already have a copy of Murdo's death certificate it might be worth the money to buy it to further your knowledge. Good Luck.

I don't have them to hand right now but I was looking at the census in Tassie this morning, I think 1922 and he listed himself as a stevedore living at Ashfield with 'Kate'
The website has been busy all day. I'll post it here as soon as I can get hold of it again. Urquhart's used to ship fruit out of Tasmania.

I know he was in Tasmania from about 1905 until sometime before 1930 when he listed in the census in Sydney. The big gap in Murdo Urquhart's history is 1891 to 1900.
