Hello A and happy mother's day.
This isn't what you are looking for but the Whitehouse name and Staffordshire prompted me to post an excerpt from this humourous article "Sale of Wives in England"
It took place in the month of August, 1773, and the facts are these :?Three men and three women went into the Bell Inn. Edgbaston-street, Birmingham, and called for the toll-book, which was kept there. In this they made the following extra- ordinary entry: "August, thirty first, 1773. Samuel Whitehouse, of the parish of Willenhill, in the county of Stafford, this day sold his wife, Mary Whitehouse, in open market, to Thomas Griffiths, of Birmingham. Value one shilling. To take her with all faults. (Signed) Samuel Whitehouse, Mary Whitehouse. (Voucher) Thomas Buckley, of Birmingham."
The parties were said to be well pleased, and the purchase-money and the market toll, demanded for the toll, were both cheerfully
paid.
Hi Janilye and happy mothers day to you too.
It does bring a smile to your face, one shilling was quite a lot of money in 1773.
Can you imagine doing that at for toll on the M7 or any other toll road. "Excuse me, I don't have the money but this man is quite happy to buy my wife with all her faults for $7.50 and we'll just fill in the toll register that I'm selling her to him and then we'll happily pay the toll".
I wonder if our current marriage vows should include the words "To take her/him with all faults", Samuel Mary & Thomas seem happy with the arrangement.
I came across your question and confirm my grandfather and Cyril Thomas de Burgh Whitehouse were Managers on the Telok Anson rubber estate in Malaysia and partners of the Behrang Estate in Perak, Malaysia, also with Archibald Sturgess. He was formerly an Officer of the Royal Indian Naval Reserve so don't know if you can find some information via them?
When my grandfather died he became the guardian to my mother and was known as Uncle Fiver. He had an adopted daughter Deirdre and they lived at Seagates, 301 Batu Ferringhi Beach, Penang. He subsequently moved to Villa Dar tel Karmak Djemma El Mokra Tangier Morocco where he died on 2 November 1966 and left his Estate to his daughter Deirdre (who had moved to Kilkea Bridge Cottage, Castledermot, County Kildare, Ireland) and Sanne Trolle (not sure if this was his wife or mistress in Morocco).
