Robert Henry STARR was born in London in 1855 (he obviously changed his age for passage). He was a son of James STARR & Sarah MILLEMAN (James was an engineer in Westminster, Central London in 1850). At this stage (but early days yet of research) it appears that Sarah's family were in Margate back in at least the 1770s (but have seen some Milleman/Milliman marriages there in the 1600s)

Robert married Hannah BOTLEY c1883 in England
- only one son John on the passenger list of the ss Tainui which left Plymouth 24 Jan 1895, and, via Capetown and Hobart, arrived in Wellington 11 March 1895
The passengers for Wellington were:
SECOND SALOON:
Rev (James) LYMBURN (who eventually was in charge at Martinborough)
Mrs LYMBURN
Miss LYMBURN (2)
Master LYMBURN
Messrs:
POWER
WALTON
WALKER
THIRD CLASS:
Miss MOYLAN
Mr STARR
Mrs STARR
Master STARR
Messrs:
KENNY
MARTIN
WARD
... the remainder of the passengers were for other ports

Robert & Muriel divorced & Robert later married Louisa Alice HILL (nee BURR)

as there is a lot of info on your other posting I will link them here for your readers: STARR in Nelson

Thanks, above you say Robert & Muriel divorced. Where does Muriel fit in should it be he divorced Hannah.

I'm so sorry, John & Alice Muriel divorced of course. That must have been in my mind

Hannah died (as per above link 'STARR in Nelson') and Robert later married Louisa Alice HILL (nee BURR)

Was talking to my Mother In Law last night about what I have found out. She said that John's son Andrew Robert went to nelson after John died to look for relatives and apparently he found a half sister. Not sure where she would have come from!

I have been reading the communications between yourself and monstarr. I am a descendant of Robert Starr b 1855 who arrived on the Tainui in 1895 and settled in Nelson with his wife Hannah (nee Botley b 1858) and son John b 1887 England. Robert's brother Stephen had arrived in 1885. He was married to Fanny and ran a news agency in Bridge St. He died 1907. I have not traced any children.
Robert and Hannah had a daughter Mabel Carina Thorley b 1895, though we do not think she was their birth daughter. Hannah died 1907 and Robert re-married Louisa Alice in d 1924. Louisa had a son from an earlier marriage. George Henry Hill drowned in the Motueka River aged 12.
John married Alice Youngdal and had 2 children before they divorced and John went to Dunedin. He re-married to Irene Beardsley and they had 3 daughters. He died in 1953.
Mabel Carina married Edward Henry Newton in 1917. Natalie Carina was born in 1918. Mabel and Edward separated. In 1932 Mabel and her new partner had a son, Robert Thorley, the family moved to Auckland
