Taranaki Herald, 8 July 1907 The death is announced of Mr Joseph Swan, an old 65th man. The deceased, after the war, went to live on his land (a soldier's grant) at Egmont Village, where he resided up to the time of his death, at the big age of 86

Poverty Bay Herald, 30 July 1907 Mr Joseph Swan, a veteran who died at Egmont Village (Taranaki) recently, is said to have seen more service in the colony than anyone, he having been at all the battles in the forties and the sixties. According to a contributor to the Taranaki News, deceased commenced his service under Colonel Despard, and also served under Colonel Jackson, an old Peninsula War officer, who joined in 1808. Mr Swan completed his service in 1864, after twenty-two years and nine months soldiering. He was allowed to resign on reduced pension, as he had enlisted for indefinite service. He the went to the South Island, where he worked on the diggings. Going to Hokitika he was wrecked on the Nelson boulder-bank, and spent two days and two nights without water before his rescue by the police boat. About 1872 he took up his 'soldiers grant' on the Upper Egmont-road, afterwards moving lower down to the village, where he lived a balance of his life, a sturdy and respected farmer. He was the first inhabitant of Egmont Village
