Looking for a Lieutenant William Hayes RN

Query by ColinBrian

Family history had my grandfather, William Hayes, being killed in a motorbike accident. This was, however, a cover for the fact that he had gone off with another woman, and illegally married her! As a consequence of this he was sent to prison, discharged from the navy, and later disappeared from sight and knowledge of his whereabouts lost, although it is believed that he went to London and had a furniture business. This was all in the 1920's, England.
I would dearly love to find any reference to this man, my grandfather. He came from Ireland, joined the navy and was promoted to Lieutenant. His story made the national papers, and was a high profile case.
Any ideas on him or his whereabouts, and place of death would be gratefully received!
