... Mr. Charles Thomas Barriball, J.P., Chairman of the Waiuku Road Board, is the third son of the late Mr. Charles Barriball, one of the most prominent and respected of the pioneer settlers of Waiuku. He was born in 1845, near Auckland, where he was educated, and came with his parents, in 1860, to Waiuku, where he started farming with his father?an occupation which he has since carried on successfully. At an early age he began to take a keen interest in the general affairs of the district, and at the age of twenty-four was elected a member of the Waiuku Road Board, to which he gave his services until 1899?a period of over twenty years?and was chairman of the Board for the greater part of that time. In 1901 Mr. Barriball was again requested to give his services to the Board, and he was again elected chairman. There are now twenty miles of good roads in the district, and six miles are metalled. Mr. Barriball is a member of the school committee, of which he has been for nine years continuously chairman. He is also chairman and trustee of the Temperance and Public Hall, and a member of the Domain Board. He was long connected with the volunteers, and was one of the original members of the Waiuku Cavalry for about thirty years. For the first half of that period he was sergeant, and for the remaining half sergeant-major, and holds the long service medal. Mr. Barriball has for years devoted his attention to the welfare of the Wesleyan church, and was instrumental in collecting funds for the erection of the present church in 1883, the Barriball family contributing most liberally to that object. It is a fine building, capable of seating 200 worshippers. Mr. Barriball is a well known breeder of Lincoln sheep, and an exhibitor and prize-taker at the leading shows in the province, having won numerous certificates, championships, and silver cups. He has always taken a leading part in the various agricultural and pastoral associations, and was three years successively president of the Franklin Agricultural and Pastoral Association. For over thirty years he has been a strong advocate of temperance. In 1872 Mr. Barriball married Miss Hodge, and they have

OLD SETTLERS DEATH
... One of the best-known settlers in the farming districts around Auckland died on Monday at Waiuku - Mr Charles T. Barriball, at the age of 71. The father of deceased, the late Mr Charles Barriball, was one of the earliest of Auckland's pioneers, having arrived in the Waitemata 73 years ago and settled in 1860 at Waiuku, where numerous branches of his family still reside.
Mr C. T. Barriball was born at Mount Eden in 1845. At an early age he served upon the public bodies of his district. For 20 years he was a member of the Waiuku Road Board and for a very long period its chairman. His service on the local school committee extended over 30 years and for more than 20 years he occupied the chair. Another period of about 10 years was covered by his membership of the Auckland Education Board as representative of the west ward. More than 50 years ago Mr Barriball was in the Waikato Militia, and later on he was a sergeant in the Waiuku volunteers, famous at that time for its prowess in military sports.
A successful farmer, he specialised in the breeding of Lincoln sheep, and was conspicuous amongst the prize takers at the Auckland district agricultural and pastoral shows.
Mrs Barriball, who survives hi, was before her marriage, Miss Hodge, whose relatives are well known settlers at Papatoetoe.
Their children comprise three sons:- Messrs, Eber, Wesley and Stanley Barriball, the last named being now in camp at Featherstone - and seven daughters - Mrs W. E. Smith, Te Aroha; Mrs F. G. Parker, Waiuku; Mrs H. Fenwick, Hamilton; Mrs F. Hosking, Auckland; Mrs A. Pickett (sic), Huntly; and Misses Ella and Louisa Barriball.
An older brother of the deceased, Mr John Barriball, is still living in the district, and is more than 80 years of age

EARLY SETTLER MOURNED
... The funeral of the late Mr C. T. Barriball took place today, the gathering of mourners being one of the largest ever seen in the Waiuku district. Among those present were the members of the Auckland Education Board, on which body the deceased represented the West Ward for ten years. The Waiuku school was closed for the day, the deceased having been member of the local School Committee for 30 years, during twenty of which he was chairman. People from all parts of the district were present, as well as a number from Pukekohe, Papakura, and other places.
One of his sons, Private Stanley Barriball, was present on special leave from Trentham.
The service was conducted by the Rev. J. Clover, of the Waiuku Methodist Church of which the late Mr Barriball had been a very active member
