New Zealand Herald, 2 October 1896 Another old citizen has passed away in the person of Mr Alfred Barchard, at the age of 68. Mr Barchard arrived her in the year 1840 in the ship Duke of Portland, in the same vessel as the late Mr Thomas Macky. On his arrival he commenced business at the corner of Victoria Lane. He subsequently opened the Wharf Hotel, and at the opening of the Thames goldfield he was one of the first on the field, where he started business as hotelkeeper in Pollen-street. Latterly he has been living in retirement. For some years he held the position of Lieutenant in the Auckland Navals. Deceased leaves a widow and grown up family
