1836 William Calladine of Hucknall, Shetland Shaw Mnf

Journal by Dave Calladine

WILLIAM CALLADINE was born October 15, 1836 in Hucknall Torkard, the eldest son of William Calladine (1803-1886) and Mary Buck (1807-). He married LOUISA ?. She was born 1838 in Hucknall Torkard, Nottinghamshire. I have copied extracts from J. H. Beardsmore's, History of Hucknall Torkard, 1909 reprinted 1983, Curios press, Hucknall, as well as correspondence from Williams descendants and cousins).

Framework-knitting (often abbreviated as 'FWK') ? the predominant occupation in Hucknall-Torkard went into steady decline with the introduction of steam powered knitting machines. About 1852, the Shetland hosiery business sprang up, and gradually gave work to the men who had been previously engaged in spider-work (lace) stockings and gloves (see Shetland Shawl Journal). Companies included Messrs William Barker, William Calladine, Michael Wilkinson, Henry Rhodes, Joseph Stainforth, Thomas Dawson and Ruben Cale was engaged in this class of manufacture.

The evidence of the prosperity occurs in the different public functions that William became engaged. The Act of 1870 opened a new era of education in Hucknall. A school board was speedily erected comprising the Rev. Curtis Jackson, and Messrs W. N. Ball, W. Calladine, J. E. Ellis, and T Hardy. Beardall street schools were built at a cost of nearly ?2000 by Mr W. Stainforth....William J. Calladine (p 133 ibid) purchased the land in Green Dragon Lane, (?375 1876), for construction of the new chapel [Baptist]. Mr William Calladine senior and Jr appear in the photo of the laying of the memorial stone by the Mayor.

The 1881 census returns show the family in Albert Street, Hucknall Torkard, RG11 3334 / 28 50
