I have limited information on my great-grandfather, Johnson Rule. He moved to South Dakota via New Jersey and Quebec, Canada. He was married to Elizabeth Cox.

I am a confused neophyte when it comes to genealogy research. I began my quest after a conversation during a short car ride to the gym with my husband a mere 2 months ago. I thought during retirement I would pursue a PhD. Now genealogy is satisfying that intense research need!

Johnson Rule
Birth: Nov. 1851, England
Death: 1920
South Dakota, USA
Father from ground reading, not in SD deaths on Ancestry per original memorial creator Ellen Bishop.
---------------
Incorrect birth year possibly on monument. 1900 US federal census listed Johnson Rule's birthdate as November 1853. Husband of Elizabeth (Cox) Rule. Johnson & Elizabeth were the parents of Emma Jane (~1874-?), William Johnson (1876-1906), Martin Lewis (~1879-?), a daughter born in 18 Oct 1881 in New Jersey, Alvriz (1884-1957), John H. (1887-1949) and Nellie E (1893-?). Johnson immigrated to America in April 1879. Elizabeth, Emma, William and Martin followed in October 1879. In 1880 they are living in New Jersey; Johnson is an iron miner. In 1891, Johnson, Elizabeth, Emma, William, Alvriz and John are living in Quebec; Johnson is employed as a miner. Martin and the daughter are not mentioned - have they passed away? In 1900, Johnson, Elizabeth, Alvriz, John and Nellie are living in Pennington County, South Dakota; Johnson is employed as a miner. The 1900 census lend credence to the hypothesis that Martin and the daughter born in 1881 have passed away. In 1910, Johnson is a widower living with his children John and Nellie in Deadwood, South Dakota; Johnson is a janitor for the post office and John is a fireman for the locomotive. Elizabeth passed away in 1910 and is buried in the Keystone Cemetery in Keystone, South Dakota. Johnson passes away at about the age of 67 and is buried in Keystone Cemetery also. LFC, 11 Jan 2013.

I have look for Elizabeth in the 1871 census and for her birth/baptism/marriage on parish records. There are a number of Elizabeths born around the right time in Somerset. She may not have been in Somerset made the assumption she was because she married there.
The only way to go back on her family is to get the marriage cert which should give her father's name &occuptation
Many thanks! Some of the information I have found, but you gave me some additional information I did not have. I have information on Elizabeth and have even been in communication with a 3rd cousin in England. If you are in the Rule line and would like information on Elizabeth, I would be happy to share.
Again, many thanks.
