Looking for John A Williams married Mary A Kelly 1875, St. John, NB, Canada

This is my great grandfather. He was supposedly born in California around 1851. He was a seaman. Family moved to Massachusetts in the 1880s or 90s. His daughter, Gertrude, married Joseph Callahan in Massachusetts. His parents names according to marriage certificate were Thomas Williams and Jane Cooper. Any definite info on his birth and ancestry would be welcome. I have no other info and have hit a brick wall.
