Welcome rhonda parker.
From memory Friedrich and Mary had a few children in South Australia.
I remember the name KRANZ very well.
Where were Frederick and Mary married?
They were married in Gawler SA on 6/3/1869. Frederick was my husband's great grandpa and we do have information about the Kranz side (the book is called "The Circle grows" written by Imelda Schulz) We were wondering about Mary's side of the family.
Could not find a marriage for Friedrich KRANZ and Mary KENNY but this must be their marriage going by the date you gave in the comment above.
Groom: William KRANZ.
Age: 23 years.
Status: Single.
Father: William KRANZ.
Bride: Mary KENNEDY.
Age: 21 years.
Status: Single.
Father: Henry KENNEDY.
Date married: 06 March 1869.
Place: Presbyterian Manse, Gawler, South Australia.
KENNEDY must be an index error. Looking at the births of their children Mary is recorded as KENNY and KENNEY, and William is recorded as Friedrich Wilhelm KRANZ.
I know you will have this information and I just wanted to point out to new members that what they see in the records may not be what they see.
Will let you know if I come across any details on Mary's side of the family.
Cheers.
Thank you so much for that. It certainly is interesting that what one sees may not be right.
Hello Rhonda and Tonkin,
Have you been able to find out anymore on the Mary A Kenny, I too am interested in her background? I have reference to her birth place as Dublin from a Newspaper Article about her husbands 83rd Birthday celebration. Also the shipping list has her coming from Meath. It mentions the marriage having taken place in the Methodist church, but I have a transcription from the Original Marriage certificate and it says Presbyterian Church. [Unless they were the same back in 1869, at the time of their marriage at Gawler. Not sure what it means with her name listed as KENNEDY and Father KENNEDY?
83RD BIRTHDAY.

83RD BIRTHDAY.
Mr Frederick William Kranz of Wirrabara celebrated his 83rd birthday on March 26. He was born in Germany in 1846 and came to Australia in 1849 with his parents and lived at Tanunda for a short time and then Nuriootpa.
His father died when he was 19 years old and he had to help his mother support the family. In 1868 he married Miss Mary Kenny, of Dublin, Ireland at the Gawler Methodist
Church. Mr. and Mrs. Kranz then lived for a short period at Nuriootpa, and then took up land four miles from Wirrabara
Mr. F. W. Kranz and Moockra. Mrs. Kranz died on July 18, 1899. Mr. Kranz relinqiushed his farm seven years ago. and took up residence with his brother end his wife, at Wirra- bara, Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Kranz.
There were six children. Those surviving are Mr. C. Kranz. of Minnipa (late of Wirra- bara), Mr. J. Kranz. Franklin Harbor; Mesdames S. Dansie. Wrrabara: and J. Redman, Whyalla.
There are 21 grand children and seven great-grandchildren. Mr. Kranz is highly respected, and is still hale and hearty, and can read without’ the aid of glasses.
I intend to go to the State Records in S.A. check the Colonial Paid Certificates, see if they have survived for Mary A KENNY, maybe it will shed some light if I can find out who sponsored her transport to Adelaide.
Wish me luck.
Regards Trosh
Thanks Trish,
I have checked my husband's Kranz family tree book and they were definitely married in a Presbyterian church. I have looked at the passenger list on the Internet and Mary came over on the Atlanta. it is recorded that she and another young lady got up to some mischief on the ship. What that was, I don't know. The Kranz book acknowledges that someone paid for her passage to Australia, but the author did not know who that person was. All the best for finding out who that was.
Regards,
Rhonda
Hi Rhonda,
Thanks so much for your reply. I have Imelda’s book as you do. Yes they were definitely married in the Presbyterian Church at Gawler.
I didn’t see the reference to Mary A KENNY getting up to mischief on the ship, I will have to go look again, I did take a copy of the actual pages.
I am going to State Records, very soon, to see if the Colonial Paid Certificates for Mary A KENNY survived, that way we will know who Paid her passage to Australia. Failing the survival of these records, I am going to look at “The Australian Joint Copying Project” (AJCP) films, they should be something on there, if I can work it all out. Wish me luck. I actually found an image of Mary Ann KRANZ tombstone if you would like a copy.
All the best TRISH
