Looking for HOWELL of Greenock/England
I am trying to trace my family tree but have hit a brick wall. My fathers grandfather came to New Zealand from England (Gateshead) about 1891? as a remittance man. His name was EDWARD THOMAS HOWELL. Edward's father was HENRY HYATT HOWELL who was a well known Geologist. Edward had 1 brother WILLOUGHBY JOHN HOWELL and 2 sisters JULIA AND ELLEN.
Edward worked at Mt Eden Prison NZ as a warder and also at Kaingaroa NZ when the forestry was planted. Edward fathered 4 sons while at Kaingaroa one of which is my grandfather. He returned to Auckland NZ without his sons and was not heard from again.
Willoughby moved to Scotland and became a clergyman in the Episcopal Church Gourock. He married Maude Mary Page Robertson. Willoughby over time became a Reverend then a Canon of the church.
I have got as far as Willoughby and Maude having a son in 1904 who is named either ALEXANDER HENRY HOWELL or HENRY H HOWELL, who also became a clergyman.
Any help in finding information would be much appreciated.

Thank you for the information. If anyone out there knows of people that might be able to do some research for me in Gourock Scotland and surrounding areas it would be much appreciated. I do know that Alexander went into the Royal Navy as a clergyman until after the war but I am unable to find him or his family from then on.
Hello Toni, while we are not biologically related, we share some links.
My records of the Howell history do not contain much more than you appear to know already, that is:
Henry Hyatt Howell born Prinkaneth Park, Gloucester, England in 1833.
Married a Julia Ann ?, born 1841 in Lamport, Northamptonshire.
Henry was District Surveyor for the Geological Survey of England.
Their children:
John L Howell, born 1865. (Possibly short-lived, as his name appears again)
Willoughby John Howell, born 1866, Gateshead.
Edward Thomas Howell, born 1871, Darlington, Durham.
I was unaware of the daughters, Julia and Ellen. Do they appear in any of the Census results?
Willoughby John Howell was vicar of St Bartholomew’s Church in Gourock, Scotland for many years. The benefactor of St. Bart’s was my great-grandfather, Alexander Page-Robertson, who was born in Sydney in 1847 and educated at Glasgow University. He became a very successful Dental Surgeon with a practice in Glasgow, while living in Gourock.
He married Mary Turnbull in 1871, and their son Alexander was my grandfather, and their daughter Maude Mary subsequently married the Rev. Howell in 1901. He was 13 years older than her.
I only have a record of them having one child, Alexander Henry Howell, born 24 August 1904. At the time of my great-grandfather’s death in 1917, Alexander Henry was his only grandchild (my father was born in 1918), and so was subsequently bequeathed a considerable fortune.
I believe he also became an Episcopal Clergyman with the Church of Scotland, but have been unable to find any trace of what became of him. My father always referred to Alex as ‘his favourite cousin’, so I imagine he may still have been around in the 1950’s, but perhaps not, and by the time Maude died in 1966 in Gourock, I was living in Australia, so I have no idea if he was around or what happened to Maude’s estate.
I would be very pleased if you could fill in any of the gaps for me. I live in Melbourne and visited Gourock in 2013, particularly to visit St. Bart’s as there were several plaques etc recording my grandparents gifts to the church. The Rev. Howell’s pink granite cross is just a few metres away from my great-grandparents identical cross. I would be happy to send you a pdf of it, if you are interested. I have only just joined this Forum today, so I have no idea what is possible in the way of communication! Regards, Andrew.
Hi Andrew. Thanks for your reply. I would so love to have a pdf of the granite cross. I have been trying to find a picture of it on the internet but haven't had any luck so far.
To add to what you know of Alexander Henry Howell, he married Margaret Gardyne on 5/12/1932. The were residing at 3 Randolph Pl, Edinburgh. Margaret's father was also a Clerk in the Holy Order. Alex was a clergyman in Haddington until 1939 when he joined the Royal Navy as a clergyman.
From 1939 on I haven't been able to find out what happened to Alex and Margaret. I did however find a death record for a Alexander Henry Howell. It read Alexander Henry Howell, Ipswich 24 Aug 1904 - Apr-May-Jun 1982.
Do you know of anyone that may have photos of Willoughby and his family? My email address is hunebun66@hotmail.com. I look forward to hearing from you soon. Regards, Toni
