Finding the Bainbridge link with Australia

Journal by Bainham

I came to Australia as a '10 pound Pom' in 1969 always believing I was the first Bainbridge to leave the UK and emigrate to Australia.
Some initial research a few years ago revealed via the 1881 UK census that a John Hall Bainbridge was visiting his family in Durham from Ballarat, Victoria
Australia. There are several other Bainbridges from Victoria listed in familytreecircles I am particularly interested to learn more about Frank Albion Bainbridge
and William Bainbridge as there are clues in their names which suggest they could be my ancestors.

Welcome Bainham.

Frank Albion BAINBRIDGE and Maria HORWOOD had four children in Ballarat, Victoria, but I have not located a marriage for them in Australia. After their last child was born in 1868 they appear to have left Victoria. Details for the births of their four children were recorded in the Victorian Birth Index as:

1.
Name: Harriet Maria BAINBRIDGE.
Born: 1862 Ballarat West, Victoria.
Died: -
Father: Frank Albion BAINBRIDGE.
Mother: Maria HORWOOD.

2.
Name: Frank Albion BAINBRIDGE.
Born: 1864 Ballarat, Victoria.
Died: 1865 Victoria.
Age: 01 year.
Father: Frank Albion BAINBRIDGE.
Mother: Maria Ann HORWOOD.

3.
Name: Henry John Hall BAINBRIDGE.
Born: 1866 Ballarat, Victoria.
Died: -
Father: Frederick BAINBRIDGE.
Mother: Maria Annie HORWOOD.

4.
Name: Eleanor BAINBRIDGE.
Born: 1868 Ballarat, Victoria.
Died: -
Father: Frank Albion BAINBRIDGE.
Mother: Maria Annie HORWOOD.

Note.
Father recorded as Frederick BAINBRIDGE for child 3.
This will be an index or informant error.

Not much to work with but it's a start.

Cheers.

Sorry I have not responded earlier. I very much appreciated your input. The information you sent is intriguing. Wondering if they
returned to the UK and will now see if I can track them down.
Thanks again - I'm very new at this and you have given me some impetus.

Harriet Maria Bainbridge is my great grandmother she was married to Henry James Cornish. Frank and Maria Bainbridge moved to Bishop Auckland, County Durham, England between 1867 and 1869 and had 2 more daughters.

I am just beginning to research my family tree and would be interested to know how you are related to them.
Thanks

Hi Theresa. There is little doubt we are quite closely related. I did a fair amount of research into the Bainbridge
Family History and a number of our ancestors lived in Bishop Auckland and Durham.
There was also one Bainbridge who went out to Australia and later returned to the UK with family who had been born Down Under.
There was also one male Bainbridge who committed suicide by jumping off a boat near the Isle of Wight!!
I'll be in the UK in May and would be happy to send you copies of the material I have.
Good luck with your research.

Hi Keith,
Sorry for the delayed reply. I would certainly be interested in your research. I haven't found a lot more at the moment but Frank Albion Bainbridge was definitely born in Bishop Auckland, Durham and was still there on the 1851 Census living at home with his father and siblings. He is back in the UK on the 1871 Census with his wife and children but was clearly in Ballarat, Victoria for some years in between.
Regards
Theresa
