Looking for John Hoskin(g)

Query by Grenville

He may have migrated to South Australia in 1849 with his wife and two children. The terminal 'g' was probably added after 1849.

Welcome Granville.

Need a few more details to assist with record searches for your John HOSKIN/HOSKING and family.

The name of John's wife and children will do to start with.
Any birth details you have will also help with record searches.

Thanks for the prompt response.

Not sure about the wife's name: one possibility is Jane Dunstone Ralph. Children are: Elizabeth (b. 1836); Richard (b. 1837); Thomas (b. 1840); Edwin (born 1841, supposedly 25 December 1841).

Thank you for your responses: yes, this is the family that I came across. There are all kinds of unresolved problems, however; as can be seen from the details, my ancestor Edwin appears in some lists and not in others; he seems to have never been christened. If this is the family, then only 4 of them migrated, with the name 'Hoskin' in the shipping records. And I have not been able to find any details about the deaths of the parents in Australia, even though in the newspaper account of Edwin's marriage to Etty in 1872 his father John is described as 'the late'. Lots of cross checking to do!

The detail about migration to South Australia: some family tree work many years ago suggested that 'John Hoskin, wife and 2 children' in a passenger list of the Pakenham, arriving Adelaide 23 March 1849. How can this be if the family is mentioned in the 1851 census!

Perhaps there is another Hosking family with father John and son Edwin. I'll keep checking.

The trouble with this kind of research is that errors keep coming back time and time again.
