My research in Cornwall, England

Article by wayne_kendall

Hi to all,

I'm researching the Kendalls of Cornwall. My earliest Kendall is William Kendall B: circa 1790 married to Jane Harris b: circa 1795. William and Jane were married in 1817. Also researching the Harris, Rickard and Cock families though possible marriages. My Kendall family move from Cornwall to West Riding Yorkshire during the 1870's. My brickwall is trying to find the parents of William Kendall.

Although the parents for Jane are not named in the wedding record I have a reasonnable assumption that Philip and Elizabeth are the parents. As for William Thomas and Elizabeth came to mind but I don't think they are the Parents for two reasons. The 1841 census indicates that he was 50 years and rounding down to the nearest 5 he would have been born 1786 - 1791. The marriage record indicates that he and Jane were married in Newlyn East and that both were from out of the parish.
Also the naming of the children in during that period was common practice where the first born son would be named after the paternal grand father. In this case the first born was William B: 1818. At this point i'm really looking for a William as the father with a William born 1786-1791. I do appreciate your input.

In your post above you say

"The marriage record indicates that he and Jane were married in Newlyn East and that both were from out of the parish."

On the marriage "otp" usually means "of this parish"

The naming didn't always follow tradition, I have several Cornish families of the same period where the first born son was named after the father and not the grandfather.

Is this the 1841 you refer to,

the family are living in St Endor, registration district St Columb Major sub district Newlyn so they are from this area, which would tie in with the baptism of William Kendall 1780, perhaps he didn't want to appear that much older than Jane.

This appears to be the right family members. There was also George born 1824. Mother is indicated as Jone instead of Jane.

As for Francis I don't have a birth record for him but his mother was not Jenifer and I believe that the Francis that you indicate is documented with another family according to census records.

William as indicated is the right William.

James as Indicated is the one that I have for now but why would he be listed as 15 yrs in 1841 when he should have been listed as 20? more research needed.

If this is the right James he would have married Elizabeth Teague in 1842 and Migrated to Tasmania and Austrailia and passed away there in 1905.
