Joseph King of Woolwich, Kent

Journal by dwiggy

My King family starts with Joseph King, born around 1795. He married Mary Fricehurst on 24 November at St Nicolas' in Plumstead, Kent. Mary's surname isn't vary clearly written on the certificate and I'm wondering if the first letter is incorrect. It could be Tricehurst, or Bricehusrt, although the letter looks more like an L or a J. They had 4 children, all born in Woolwich: Joseph William (born 1827), George (born 1829), Frances A (born 1836)and Eliza born 1837). Eliza and Joseph must have caught an illness together from which they both died, as they were buried on the same day - 19 August 1840 at St Mary Magdalene's in Woolwich. The family were liveing at Warren Lane, Woolwich. By the 1941 census, Mary had already remarried, to Thomas Absolom Bennett and had another child, Mary Ann Bennet (born 1841). Mary married Thomas on 22nd February 1841. Her surname is even more badly written than the previous certificate, which makes me think the name might begin with a different letter. Her father's name was William and I can't find any further (older) trace of them anywhere.

Thomas Bennett household, 1841 census, Warren Lane, Woolwich, Kent
Thomas Bennett, 30 yrs, labourer, born in county.
Mary Bennett, 35 yrs, not born in county.
Joseph King, 14 yrs, born in county.
George King, 12 yrs, born in county.
Francis King, 7 yrs, born in county.

Thomas Bennett household, 1851 census
Thomas Bennett, head, married, 46 yrs, stoker gass works, born in Plumstead, Kent.
Mary Bennett, wife, married 55 yrs, born in Breade, Sussex.
Mary Ann Bennett, daughter, 8 yrs, born in Woolwich, Kent.
Joseph King, son in law, unmarried, 23 yrs, labourer, born in Woolwich, Kent.
George King, son in law, unmarried, 21 yrs, apprentice, Woolwich, Kent.
Frances A King, daughter in law, unmarried, 16 yrs, born in Woolwich, Kent, blind.
Mary Holiday, niece, unmarried, 13 yrs, house servant, born in Woolwich, Kent.

Joseph William King married Ann Elizabeth Spalding on 29 August 1852 and stayed in Woolwich where they had at least 7 children.

George King married Phoebe Groves and also stayed in Woolwich, where they had at least 9 chidren. George and Phoebe are my 3 great-grandparents. George was a waterman on the Thames. He died in 1918. Phoebe died in 1927.

I'm looking for anyone who might know anything further about this family, especially Regarding Mary Fricehurst.

I had a look at the image on ancestry for the marriage of Joseph King and Mary, and comparing it to previous marriage by the same Samuel Brett Sheriff it looks more like a "T" his "F" is slightly different in shape if you go back further through the images.

so it looks like her name may be Tricehurst

also found this record

Name: Mary Tricehurst

This could possibly be Joseph King but can't be sure

This could possibly be Mary's Father going from birth place in 1851 Census and her brother & his wife surname Ticehurst

1841 England Census about William Ticehurst
Name: William Ticehurst
Age: 70
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1771
Gender: Male
Where born: Sussex, England
Civil Parish: Brede
Hundred: Gostrow
County/Island: Sussex
Country: England
Household Members:
Name Age
Thomas Ticehurst 35 Ag Lab
Mary Ticehurst 25
William Ticehurst 70

you can follow Thomas & Mary through the Census as "Ticehurst"

This could possibly be Wiliam's death as I can't find him on 1851 Census

Deaths Jun 1841
Ticehurst William Ticehurst 7 323

The surname may be Ticehurst and because neither Joseph King or Mary signed the marriage it may have been Samuel Brett Sheriff's presumption of Tricehurst instead of Ticehurst or it could have been Mary's accent or the way Mary said her name.

Wow, I can't believe your quick and informative response! Thanks. This is great. I also did a bit more digging (at Ancestry.com) on one of the King children, Joseph William, as one of his sons had an unusual name - Berry! Which led me to parents for Joseph King the same as you found - Berry King (born 1761 London, died 1826 Woolwich) and Ann Etridge (born around 1763). So Joseph's baptism is the one you found. Berry's father appears to also be Joseph King and Ann's father is John Etridge, mother is Sarah. Berry and Ann married 22 November 1784 in Plumstead and had at least 1 more child, Eliza King (born 1808). As the marriage date for Joseph and Mary is the same as the one in the Index for Mary Tricehurst, I think it is safe to assume that her name is indeed Tricehurst and I've now changed my tree to that. Now to follow up on the census returns you found. Thanks again!
