OBITUARY.Fix this text
The LATE MR. WILLIAM
GERTAU.
The late Mr. William Gertau, of
Bumburnie, near Clare, who died
recently at the age of 81 years, was
born in Altona, Germany in 1854,
and came to Australia in a sailing
vessel in 1872. The vessel was ship-
wrecked and ran into a sandbank,
and they were held up for some time
— the voyage out lasting 80 days.
Mr. Gertau landed at Port Adelaide
and then went to Port Pirie, remain-
ing there for a short period. Then
he came to Clare and worked for
Messrs. Ramsay & Co. at the Clare
Foundry as an iron moulder for 12
months. He then went back to Ger-
many for only a short period, coming
back to South Australia and settled
at Clare, where he has lived ever
since. He worked in the tannery
for 13 years, and was married to the
late third daughter of the late Wil-
liam Kirchner, of Condowie. After
his marriage he purchased property
known as the Flag-Staff, now the
property of Mr. Nelson Ashby, and
later purchased property at Bum-
burnie, where he carried on dairying
and gardening operations until his
death. There are eight members of
his family — four sons and four
daughters — Messrs. W., F. J., J. H.
and O. F. Gertau, all of Stanley
Flat, near Bumburnie; Mrs. P. Mor-
row, of Tarlee; Mrs. W. J. Bawden,
of Clare; Mrs. L. Mansfield, of
Broken Hill; and Mrs. J. Paech, of
Andrews. There are 26 grand
children.

OBITUARY.
THE LATE MRS. W. GERTAU.
Mrs. Wilhelmina Gertau, an old
resident of the district, died at her
home (Bumburnie) near Clare, in
her 74th year. She was born at
her late residence in 1860, the pro-
perty then being owned by her late
parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Kirch-
ner, late of Condowie, she being the
third daughter. In 1883 she was
married to Mr. William Gertau, of
Clare, who is an old and respec-
ted identity of the Clare district.
Soon after their marriage they went
to live at the old homestead, and re-
sided there ever since. She was of
a quiet disposition, but took a keen
interest in dairying, being an ex-
cellent butter maker. Her husband
and eight children survive, they are
Mesdames ~P. Morrow, W. Gordon

(Broken Hill) ; J- Pietsch (An-
drews) ; Messrs. William, Frank,

HI my father was Reginald Gertau, mother Madge Gertau
Dads father was Franz Jacob Gertau (Frank), mother Mable
Alice Gertau. Keith, Allan and Douglas where Dads brothers.
He also had another brother Len who is buried at Salisbury and two sisters, Esther and Jean.
Esther is buried at Clare and Jean in Adelaide.
If you would like any more info I may be able to help, I have done a bit of research on the Gertau side, not the Brereton. My sister has also.
