Looking for info on James (Jack) Francis Garvey - Toowoomba QLD
I am interested in finding out more information on Jack Garvey as he is listed as being the father of my grandmother who was born 1 Nov 1916 to Martha Ann McGarry of Toowoomba. She adopted my Nan & until now we have never known he was the father as he was not listed on Birth Cert. He was a fireman on the railways and I believe he died 17/8/64 and is buried in Toowoomba Cemetary. Wondering if there is any relatives that can shed some light on this man? Did he marry? What did he look like? Also any information on Martha Ann Mcgarry born in Dublin would be appreciated. Thanks

Thanks for this info it gives me a bit of relief to know that she at least kept one child as she gave away for adoption 3 children in 1914,16,18. Previously emigrated from Ireland, so who knows she probably had more before she arrived! She was apparently around 26yrs old when she had her first child here in Qld. Looks like she never tried to contact her 3 adopted children (2 from sep fathers and 1 adopted also from the man she finally married - Albert Manstone). An interesting character who I am hoping to find more about. Especially the father of my nan who was James Francis Garvey - Fireman QLD railways
I think that this may be another son. if this is the case she kept in contact and he even takes on her married name. Martha's husband has died by this time. Her husband Albert served in Rhodesia, The Boer War and in the First World war, where he lost his leg.
MANSTONE JOSEPH PATRICK : Service Number - QX5725 : Date of birth - 11 Apr 1918 : Place of birth - BRISBANE QLD : Place of enlistment - TOOWOOMBA QLD : Next of Kin - MANSTONE M
This may be another one of Martha's children.
BIRTH.
Mary MCGARRY.

Father: Not Recorded.
Mother: Martha MCGARRY.

It is the son she had before she married Albert. We were told he was also placed in care, perhaps he was contacted as he was the son they had together before they married. The daughter who was born 1914 was born in Magdalen home, Wooloowin QLD the nuns named her 'Mary Magdalene'. Her adoptive parents named her Rita and she is still living today @101! I visited her last week, as she was the unknown sister of my Nan born to Martha in 1916 died 1987. Rita was happy to know she had family as she always wondered why she was given up and who her mother & father were. Now she knows she is a little glad she was given up as Martha seemed very unstable. However Marthas, contact with her 2 boys showed perhaps her circumstances were to dire to raise these illegitimate girls. I am hoping to get some contact with the Manstone descendants, perhaps they may have some insight into Marthas character. I can't thankyou enough for this information

I have found out that the James Francis GARVEY you are looking for, did not have children, you’re probably thinking of John Francis GARVEY.
Hello & thanks for this response. I have a new email address so this is why I have only Replied now.
Yes, it seems you’re definitely on the same family tree as me!
I’ll look into it a bit more but as my grandmother was illegitimate I’m wondering if he even knew she existed!
I’m interested in what information you have on this part of the family?
Regards, Alison
