Four months ago I wrote about my family history research. Since then I have received the results of the DNA tests. My potential relative (JHL) and I did not match on FTDNA's Family Finder test, but we did match 37/37 markers on the Y-DNA test. This means that we do share a common relative. There is a 50% that this relative is in 2-3 generations, a 90% chance that they are within 5 generations and 95% chance that they are within 8 generations. From JHL's family stories, it seems most likely that we are 4th cousins. This range of relationship is at the limit of the FF test and depends on how the 2 parents Autosomal DNA is shared when a new life is formed. Other people have found 5th, 6th cousins etc by this means but it is all down to chance.
The likely scenario we now have is that the family was in County Laois and then moved to Dublin. The father found work in the organization that managed Irish lighthouses at the time. From this he found work for 2 of his sons, including my great great grandfather. Two or three other brothers joined the army. Whether a lighthouse keeper or in the army, you get posted all over the place, so I suppose it is not surprising that the family became fragmented and lost touch with each other. At least the army kept better records than the lighthouse people! I am hopeful that some more may be revealed by inspection of Dublin parish registers, many of which have almost complete runs from the mid to late 18th century. The journey continues......

Hello

My mother was a Landers from County Limerick

I am fairly certain that the Landers name is huguenot in origin

Most huguenots eventually converted to Catholocism in Ireland

Hi - I am in England and am researching my Irish family.

Oral family history is that we have Hugenot (converted from Judaism) blood. A trace back to early 19th Century shows the surname Landers/Lunders appearing. However, conversion to Catholicism appears with more recent ancestors being married in Dublin Catholic churces.
